Hi all,
apologies in advance if you have seen this post on LRO forum.
I own a Serie IIA diesel from 1969 and it's been rusting for over 15 years (shame!) in Lille, Northern France. The chassis needs to be replaced (it's beyond repair), steering is quite loose, the diesel pump is to be replaced and it needs body work, a paint job and probably more.
I'm attached to it and I would like to restore it in the UK. I'm based in London, the plan would be to put it on a flatbed and bring it from France to UK but not too far from the coast if possible.
I would welcome some recommendation of specialists who restore land rovers series, preferably between London and the coast.
Also if anyone have an idea of the type of budget range I'm facing, I'd welcome some insight.

Depends on what you want done and to what standard. I wouldn't be surprised to see 20 grand go up in smoke quite quickly...

...you can see for example on the Richards site how much they want for a chassis - bulkhead dead? Engine dead? Gearbox dead? Bodywork nadgered?

Engine, gearbox, shafts, axles, breaks, tyres are in good conditions
bulkhead not dead but will need some repair (the part which is between the feet and the engine)
bodywork Ok except the back left wing which need straightening
chassis is dead
I do not want a price winning restoration but have it in working order and not looking too shabby
the chassis is circa £2000 so I was thinking of spending £3000 on it including fitting, then I do not know, but not £20k...
Any recommendation on a specialist who can do this south of London?
I've looked at Dunsfold website and they look the part, anyone having had works done by them?

I'm not the person to ask about other people's work. I often sit and watch Wheeler Dealers and think "Oh come on Edd you know better than that"!

I too have looked at the Dunsfold site and they seem to me to be the 20K +++ option. But don't write them off just yet ask the questions you are asking here to them and some other people to get an idea of what the starting price is going to be like...
 
Rough prices for parts below
Galvanised chassis: £2000
Galvanised bulkhead: £1000
Misc parts (springs, bushes, stainless bolts etc): £1500


On top of all the prices above you would then have labour charges which would be a lot if you are not going to be doing the work yourself. I would have thought if you are just looking for a sympathetic restoration to make it last and get it back on the road it wont be 20k. But it could easily run to 10K depending on how much else you find that needs repairing/replacing as you take it apart. Of course the more you can do yourself the less it will cost, for example I managed to swap my bulkhead on my own in a weekend but the local land rover independent garage wanted £1000 if I supplied the galv bulkhead and all parts.
 
The trouble with changing the chassis is the temptation to fix a million other things whilst they are accessible. For example, it would be daft not to put a new clutch in it whilst the engine is out. I bet that would add another 2 or 3 hundred quid alone for a professional garage to do and then there is the water pump etc etc. If I was changing my chassis, I would budget for double the cost of the chassis change.

You should expect to pay around £2-2.5k for a rechassis (not including the chassis of course). Then it's down to whatever else you want to do. I would disagree regarding the clutch price at £2-300, if you've split it down to the bare chassis etc,then a clutch should only be an extra hours labour. I would be doing stuff like new brake pipes, replace bushes etc. They gave to be done anyway & the Labour cost at this stage will be small, in fact a lot of those jobs will be part of the rechassis, it's the price of the parts you need to consider

I would have liked to do it myself but I lack the space (the joys of living in London) and to some extend the time, hence the expensive route of going via a professional
