Greasy old boy garage perfectly describes my local garage. He's a one man operator in a dilapidated corrugated iron shed. He's worked with landys for 40 years and has in-depth knowledge beyond my experience. Got it from servicing farmers landys. He doesn't do MOTs and has the cheapest hourly rate so I take our other cars to him. Totally reliable no bull**** service. Guys like that are getting thin on the ground. He's into military vehicles so his yard is full of fantastic trucks, Champs etc.

whereabouts are you ? it doesn't say on your profile, surely there's somebody on this forum that is within a short drive to get to the bottom of this, if you let us know we can probably help you

Garage has it now , owner used to maintain them and Defenders in the army so really knows his stuff (lucky coincidence) so ill wait and see , he will phone me this week , I think now the issue will be man hours re rebuild (if poss) vs cost of new engine , ill let you know.

Keep going, these vehicles have such a huge grip on you once you drive one. You will regret selling it, I did and luckily I found a better one cheaper.

yes i took my series 2a out for the first time yesterday, after a restoration, and i couldn't beleive how quiet it is (petrol) allways had diesels, this was a diesel when i bought it but was dead noisy, so decided to put a petrol in it as it started life as a petrol, its like driving a car brilliant

I'm sure it will have a happy ending, Neil - even if there may be more setbacks.

It might cost a bit to fix but if you're confident the chassis is strong and bulkhead solid, what you'll end up with is a dependable, more reliable Land Rover.

Both feet on the ground.....

Ok , awaiting the inevitable phone call tomorrow , any suggestions on best case scenario , so far all I know is he can't start it and that compression is at 90% on 2 cylinders and down to 20% on other 2 , I drove it to the garage , there was a knocking noise poss loud tapping rather than knocking , he is taking head off Tomorrow to have a look , could it be warped pistons AND rod knock ? I'm hoping not , I knows its difficult to diagnose (even for someone looking at it )but Id like some sort of idea, I'll let you know tommorow

You never know could be knacked rings ... low comp, piston slap for the tappy knock ...
At least it's not seized ... *crosses fingers, toes, legs etc.*

Neil - brace yourself for a different engine.......................... get an ad up on here in preparation - hopefully someone will have a decent one......................... [could be head gasket - but - there ought to be other symptoms.....................] as always, good luck
