Still no update , compression is fine , strong spark , fuel flowing , new points , new rotar arm , new condensor , new leads , strong spark to plugs , its becoming a bit infamous at the garage , I'll let you know , bloody public transports not cheap is it !!

Has the dizzy ever been removed and re-fitted? If it's wrongly set up to fire / spark on the exhaust stroke it'll spark but never start. Just another desperate suggestion.

OK , finally an answer , garage got it started , they are not charging me for any of the work (only parts) . changed all parts of ignition system , compression is there but at 2.5 , is banging like a good un. Engine replacement , rebuild needed , I am going to have to sell it on , I am gutted , took me to the age of 40 to get one and I only had it for a year.
I know whats going to happen , im going to end up with a mpv with a million miles on it.

Should be a few second hand 2 1/4 petrols about. Not a difficult engine change either. Might work out cheaper than getting another vehicle.

ill have a look what I can get for it , there are series 3s without engines (and wheels) on ebay selling for £900!

I would bite the bullet and change the engine if I were you. They don't cost much. A rebuild would be better but it'll cost more.

Good reconned units sell quite well, but not ridiculous.

Or you could get yours rebuilt, might be worth a pm to james about that, or try local engine places.

Or just go secondhand on ebay and ring round the breakers if you want to get a cheapie! :)

You probably only need a short engine, then you can put all your new bits on it.

+1 on the getting a replacement engine, especially given your comments about taking so long to find a landy.

pick a working engine up off the bay then rebuild your own at your leisure

I agree - selling it as it is now will put you at a disadvantage - chucking another engine in much better plan. Someone on here must have a reasonable one [so many conversions have been done] hell you might even find a 5 bearing or 2.5 so an improvement at the same time. Try a wanted ad on here. I've got a 2.25 in a hedge you can have - running when parked up but been in the weather................ Suffolk/Norfolk border. Good luck

Just had another thought? If that engine is meant to be knacked anyway, why not pull the head off, and just have a visual check that it isnt just a burnt out valve or a holed piston is cauing the problem. No big deal to change either, you would be well on the way with the head removed.

Yes, 2.5 petrol would be very nice in a series!

That is a good offer, most of the barn finds I have found started up with fresh fuel and a charged battery. :)

x3 on Engine replacement. Man up Neil! You can get that engine completely refurbished. There are a number of people who do this. One being Turner Engineering. You could have it done as just the half, full or just the cylinder head. Don't give up now you've got one. I've been there and it's better option than trying to sell the landy with a knackered engine. I've also been there with high mileage MPV's and know what I'd prefer. . You can get your garage to do the swap. Turner will arrange for collection and deliver it back to the garage ready to re-fit. I recollect mine took about two weeks end to end to getting the landy back from the garage. It would be like a new engine and needs running in and head re-torqued after 500 miles etc. You'd regret not doing this, day dreaming about your old landy with a ****e MPV parked outside!

I fear Neil isn't that cashed up......................... but agree replacement and at least keep the landy - iirc it's up for it's MOT soon as well. I've offered a rough/incomplete engine but surely someone on here has a reasonable one he can have? [let's be honest - they aint worth much]

Ive got approx £400 , thats it , that would have to be repair rather that replace and that would need to include labour! , ill make some calls.
