series 3 trouble

have a series 3 ex mod 109,severe clunking changing gear especially from 1st to 2nd also severe vibrations, a mate had a look and diagnosed excesive play on rear drive shaft ,this is my first landy,any comments gratefully recieved,ta

Would i be right in thinking he meant the prop shaft? If tere is excessive play in the Universal joints on this it could cause the knocking noises you describe also check all the springs and axle alignment whilst under there

Dodgy UJ's are a defeinite possibility, check as well that the PO didnt fit extended shackles to the back, these will lift the rover at the expense of misaligning the diff angle and the ujs will be damaged by this, and be more of a cause of vibration.
