Hi, it is 6 months since I lost my keys to my SWB.It hasn't moved since then, so I will have to do something about it. how easy is it to fit a new barrel to the lock without the old key?
Any clever ideas out there?

I've got the steering lock out of mine at the minute and I am not sure how you would get the barrel out, it looks like it is pinned into position. I think i've seen some place that reconditions the steering lock but it's about 150ish. The other option is to drill out the shear bolts and remove the switch from the end and use a screwdriver to start it. Only down side is it makes the security non existant.
 
You need to be able to turn the key to disengage the pin - the pin is not in direct alignment with the release hole in the lock assembly/switch.
You might end up drillling out the old lock, or get lucky and try whatever old keys you have about the place.
 
Yes, been there and drilled it out. Not specifically on a Series III column lock, but done it on door locks and an early IIA ignition lock. Be careful and use a light hand and it's doable.
 
To get shear bolts off use a dremel to cut a groove in the head and get a screwdriver on it. Not sure how you get the barrel out but let us know when you;ve worked it out as I need to swap mine - I have the opposite problem. Any key will start mine, or at a push a thumb nail...
 
Have you got another loack (ie a door) that fits the same key? If you have can you get it out and get the tumblers out? You can work out the key shape from them. sometimes they have the number on, if so you can get a key ket to the number.
 
Once the key is inserted you press a button in a hole on the side of the barrel and the whole thing slides out. Not easy without the key :(
 
All you need is a bit of wire and you can start it without a key anyway. Steering lock is the issue though try sticking a screwdriver in it and try and wring out the innards. You could start it with any key then I know but lets face it if some tnuc want to steal it they will regardless of whether or not they have a key:mad:
