Hi, i'm rewiring my series 3 and have most of the loom in (i used the remained of the old loom as a pattern) but i have a few wires spare.....i was wondering if anyone has any links to wiring diagrams (other than the Haynes ones) for a series 3 109 diesel negative earth.

Thanks in advance...................

If you could give a discription and rough location of the wire I may be able to help as I made detailed notes when removing the loom in my diesel. I have now re-wired the whole vehicle within the space of a day.

i have one brown wire (small female spade) which has no location on the back of the ignition switch. i think im gonna have to get out the multimeter at the wkend and trace the wires. i am trying to find another diagram because the haynes one doesnt seem to match up too well. any help greatly appreciated as i dont want to melt my new loom.

I'll have a look at home, take a piccy or two and let you know tomorrow if you can wait that long. I also have series three workshop manual to check.

that would be great thanks. ill have to take the picture on wed cos i'm not home until then.

I was on about me takin a piccy or two so that you can see exactly how mine is wired. I may be able to get back to you tonight if I have time. I'v got some series 1 gearbox mounts to drop off and the local army cadets to run tonight! sounds fun eh!! Probably send yer info bout 10 ish.

lol..........busy man then!

That would be alot more useful than me taking a picture of my rubbish wiring! Thanks

hi, sorry to jump in, but if you could post a pic of your ignition, I would be very obliged - I have hit a standstill wiring my diesel sIII as the ignition had no wires attached when I started. According to haynes
1)red\brown
2)white\red
3)white
4)two browns (one from starter, one from the bundle of brown wires

my problem is that the white\red does not fit on terminal two of the ignition so I think the diagram is a little wrong - as such a picture of someones setup would get me going.

As to the OP's problem, I bought a new loom and as far as I can see it has five brown wires in the clutch of wires all joined together, haynes says there are 4 - so this would mean that there is a spare live unswitched feed.

Hi johnboymac
You want
Page 50 of Land Rover Series III manual Part 6-PDF
page 1 of Land Rover Series III manual Part 7-PDF

I would invest in a DVM and buzz it out according to the above wiring chart.
And remember electricity is colour blind (Don't assume your predecessors has stuck to the colour code).

Good luck

Ps
My Landy is petrol so a pic wont help sorry.

Hi all,
Again I had problems with time last night as I was getting my 90 redy for MOT so I have not got a pic of my series three, but I have got a picture as below and can explane where the wires go on the picture.

  • Top left large spade is for the Brown & Red wire - glow plug coil
  • Top right double conection is for the two brown (one larger, one smaller) - to alternator/bat.
  • Bottem left (Number 3) is a white wire - to light fuses
  • Bottom right (Number 4) is a red & white - to starter
Hope this helps - let me know!

brilliant! exactly what I wanted to hear..... however that is not how haynes or LR manual has it - they have
1=brown\red (thats the double terminal)
2=red\white (thats the large terminal)
3=white (bottom left on your pic)
4=two browns - (single bottom right)

It didn't seem physically possible, but I needed confirmation from someone who has a working setup.

I guess it could be that the switch has changed over time.
many thanks, J

I know - thats why I thought I would help out as this has confused me in the past and that's why I made detailed notes when I stripped it for a rebuild. Although the vehicle is not finished yet it starts fine every time with working glow plugs and the charge light is going off when it should! I 100% guarentee that this is correct!! I was drivin around with it like this for about 3 years before restoration started!!

Did you ever work this out.. I have the an 82 Series 3 and replaced ignition switch, its the same you have however the glowplugs only start when its cranking which seems odd.

I cant wire it any other way due to the 2 large spades (1 and 2( and EVERYTHING else works which makes me think I may have the wrong switch. But the seller and your pic points otherwise.

Some of me thinks, if these were spark plugs it would be working perfectly.
