It would depend on what kind of winching you want to do. A capstan is good for jobs like moving logs around. It is not really a self-recovery winch, especially as it does not have an attached wire. You need a seperate rope, and ideally the capstan needs two people to operate, although it can be done with one person.
For self-recovery a drum winch would be better as you have the cable with you all the time. The hydraulic system is very complex but pretty bullet-proof (I have one myself). The shaft-driven drum winch is simpler but rare to find complete. That said, the same can be said of capstans as the drive mechanism is often missing.
Hydraulic and shaft driven winches will generally use your PTO output on the back of the gearbox so cannot be used in conjunction with an overdrive.
Capstans are driven off the front of the engine, some drum winches (Turner??) also run in the same way but are very rare. All of these types require the engine to be running to operate the winch.
An electric winch can be used with the engine off assuming you have adequate battery power. They will hammer the electrics though under regular heavy use.
All winches are heavy and will act as a lump of weight on the front of your vehicle when not in use. Uprated front springs were standard fit when a winch was fitted to petrol vehicles.

A tirfor is a hand winch, not vehicle mounted.

capstans are all well and good but i find on extreme gradients they are useless the dog does not engage properly because the engine moves back slightly due to gravity pain in the arse

Not entirely sure what you mean by standard looking - I assume you mean you want a winch that is "in-period" with the vehicle. In which case anything bar a modern electric winch would be correct. The warn electric winch was available from about 1974 if not earlier. Mechanical and hydraulic drum winches even earlier than that.

if your going that route the one you one want is the mechanical drum winch, will loose the posibility of a overdrive but you get an amazing winch, that will pull a house down if the engine is set up correctly becase it is powered off the pto

Anything from £100 to £200 for the roof rack and £50 for the ladder. They do come up on eBay every now and then. You can also sell it using the for sale section on here.
Might be worth be keeping, as they are desirable accessories.

i would use a t maxx 9500 very good electric winch
reasonably priced
or a hydraulic winch made by red winch which are unstoppable

I just got a Ramsey winch looks old school and correct on a series motor imo However not that old really maybe 10 15 years they are worm wheel electric winch. Wont be a comp winch but will just keep running and running aslong as you can supply 12v to it.
Actually I got 2 and only need 1 but one is missing the motor and Pinion gear so will source parts, test and resell hopefully
