Of course you CAN beat them .....

It's Called a TDi

Fair enough IF youve got a 90/110 with a 19j in it and you cannot be arsed swapping it for a proper engine .

I'd not bother ACTUALLY fitting a 19j to anything other than a boat on the end of a long length of chain .

Certainly not a series when there is a much better, more reliable AND easier to fit option
With the price of a Tdi I probably wouldn’t bother sourcing a TD. But they are fine in their own right.

Not as speedy as a Tdi. But they do go ok in a 90 and are more refined and less noisy over a Tdi. My Uncle has 2 TD’s. One in the farm hard top owned from new and the other in a trials Vehcile. Between them they have covered almost 600,000 miles. No engine issues at all.

Exactly. It's not 2006 anymore, and they days of being able to find a plethora of rusty, MOT-failed Discos for cheap with barely run-in engines to pillage are over. These days you're left with an engine on a pallet of dubious history, or else a well-worn engine still in the car which will probably want rebuilding anyway. Whereas if you have a 19J already (or pick one up for next to nothing because no one wants them) then it makes sense and parts are cheap.
