just because you have not seen one before does not mean it does not exist, pretty much every day I learn something new on this forum alone.

I remember first time I saw a small metal fuel filter in the same location as the ops sedimentor but on a early 90, again not seen one of them before.

But if you dont have it that means it wasn't fitted so why are you fitting one...

Also cobbled together where I come from is not bodging it means using parts that fit and work together properly...your fitting an S3 engine into a S2A and trying to find an unusual fuel system that exits on a parts manual can you post pics of manual and what country are you posting from...your other thread about engine number raises questions as well dont you think...

This is the page from the LR parts manual..... as you can see, the bracket is shown but not clearly - part number 569585. The pictures David Leech posted show it so much better and show where and how it's mounted - again, a big thanks for that .



It's of interest to me because I'm rebuilding a Series 2 onto a new chassis. At some point in it's life that Series 2 Land Rover has been updated with a later Series 3 engine, part of the fuel system for which includes this sedimenter..... On the old chassis the sedimenter had just been rudely mounted direct to the chassis, which didn't look right - a look in the parts manual showed that it should be mounted in a bracket, with a part number. As I'm rebuilding the car anyway I have this opportunity to redress the missing bracket - Land Rover fitted it for a reason after all! I couldn't find an example or any photos of it by searching by part number, hence this thread - plus I wanted to confirm where it was fitted on the Land Rover. Now I understand what it is, where it fits and what it's supposed to do I can either find or make one to complete the installation.

Why it wasn't fitted when the engine was swapped back in the mists of time, who knows... it was probably deemed unnecessary by whoever did the work or was already missing or was omitted to make it easier to service - it doesn't really matter. It wasn't present and should be, so now's the time to fix that.

You could replicate the location of the later series 3 on the bulkhead which is better as it’s in a cleaner location, does not need the mounting bracket and no pipe connections in an awkward place under the floor, if you don’t have the 2 mounting holes in bulkhead then nutserts ( screwed rivets ) very good

Series three sedimentor was under the drivers feet chassis rail, export specification, and extreme use option. Fuel filter on the bulkhead.

Ahh penny drops so is there a filter inside sedimentor or does rusty crapppy bits just sink to bottom

No, no filter inside - there's a cone over which the fuel flows and the crap settles out into the bottom of the housing. To my knowledge these CAV DPA housings for the sedimenter and the fuel filter are the same castings with different drillings. The centres then either accept the filter element or the sedimenter bowl as required.

I thought about moving the whole thing to the bulkhead next to the filter, but it means running the fuel pipe up to the sedimenter, back to the fuel lift pump, then back up to the filter, then back to the injection pump! The lift pump is different to the earlier versions as it doesn't have a sediment bowl incorporated. This sedimenter is designed to be fitted upstream of the fuel lift pump i.e. between tank and lift pump and it seems the best location for that is in the pipe run along the chassis from tank to pump.... seems Land Rover concluded the same when they mounted them down under the floor too.

Crap settles. My first series had a sedimentor three quarters full of sand. I presume from being refilled from cans....

It is a sedimentor, 200 tdi disco had them fitted over the rear axle, think 110 were the same, not sure on the 90 models.
Inside there is a disc widget that lets crap go to the bottom section whilst fuel flows across the top bit.

There are also a few variations on the theme, ie filter only, filter and sedi bowl, taller filters, filters with drains.

Yes fitted above the rear axle, just in front of it under the wheel arch on the drivers side of a 90

Thanks to the replies here (and particular thanks to David Leech!) I now have this:-


Whilst it might not be an original (I couldn't find one for sale anywhere) I think it's a reasonable facsimile of one and didn't take long to clatter together from bits in the scrap bin. It's now all fitted up with the sedimenter, which is all plumbed in and doing it's job I think it looks a pretty close match to the original set up...
