Hi all,
This is my continuation of my sons unfinished/rebuild conversion which he abandoned about 3+ years ago.

I am having problems with the halfshaft grinding into the back of the stub axle, part 599826 (new) which he supplied to me saying they were correct for the conversion. Unfortunately he cant remember much about it.

The manual shows no sleeve/bush of any kind in fact there is no place to fit one,

so I thought the halfshaft slipped into the back of the stub axle.
Sadly it has chewed into the stub axle.
I am using the parts supplied to me but it seems something is not quite right.
Can anyone help me with this one please.

i have no idea whats in the kits and what you have, but i can say for certain that picture is not a standard stub axle tube
 
oh thats why they look different to mine then, yours are pre1980 type. whats the age of your actual truck ?

october 80 the front axles were rationalised (same parts used for 88 and 109) 88s got upgraded to 24 spline outer half shafts like 109 always had, BUT !, the halfshafts were not the same as pre 1980 109 half shafts. they had a new seal land added, and there was a seal on the back of the stub axle tube to stop swivel oil going into the wheel bearings.

It is a 1983 November.
The stub axle was given to me by my son to fit the Heystee mods.(not by Heystee) http://www.heystee-automotive.com/
I do not know what was fitted originally. The original stub costs an arm and a leg.
I was hoping someone had done a mod or could help me.
I will get in touch with Heystee and ask their opinion.
 
I think there a possibility you are mixing Land Rover parts that were never compatible. This might not have anything to do with the conversion. There's a difference between series two and series three stub axles and their respective half shafts. If I were you I'd check that first or discuss it with the kit maker if you can get them to respond...

As I posted earlier, the parts all came from my eldest son's abandoned project of 3+ years ago.
This is being done mainly by my middle son, I just post the questions etc
Having looked closely at everything it seems eldest son bought the wrong stub axles.
Looking at the Heystee site it says all they supply is a modified swivel housing and hub which accepts Defender callipers etc
It does say on the website http://www.heystee-automotive.com/ for all Series Land Rovers
All other parts stay the same

Puddlejumper.... No mods to the standard parts,,,, The Heystee mods are not relevent I believe.
I enclose pics of the original half shaft fitted.
I hope my son still has the original stubs in his garage, as they are quite expensive new.

ok, thats good! so your half shafts also agree with me (us ?) that they are post october 1980 type, they are 24 spline and you have the area where a seal would run. so thats two post 1980 components which say those stub axles are not for you.

heres a picture of the back of my post 1980 stub axle tube, clearly they "made the hole bigger" for want of a better phrase to give clearance for the seal, and and the extra journal on the half shaft for the seal

I was talking to my son this morning (phone) and asked him why he had the older stub axles. He started talking about metric parts and doing a mod back to pre 1980.
I didn't understand, he would have needed earlier half shafts.
I just hope he still has the original stubs even if they are US I can check for fit

This is an update regarding my stub axle/half shaft problems.
I have spoken to my son and he didn't realise that the parts would not match, he thought it was a case of bolt it all together.

My choice now to get it all to fit is either to get a new pair of heystee hubs (the ones I have are too big inside to machine down) at a guess £600
Find some wheel bearings that fit the post Oct 1980 stub axles (which I now have) and the inner pre Oct 1980 hub which is the same size as the Heystee.
Get some new pre Oct1980 halfshafts (outers) and drive members. (probably go for this)
Revert to drum brakes on the front, all parts will have to be new.

Any thoughts there cheers Peter
 
what a ball ache.

wont the pre 1980 rearmost hub bearing fit a post 1980 stub axle tube then ? i thought the only difference was that the hub was made bigger to allow larger outside diameter bearing

p.s going back a step, there should be a felt washer behind the castle nut and washer at the very outer end of the half shafts. would that buy you a couple mm clearance between the half shaft and rear of the pre 1980 stub axle tube ?

The pre 1980 inner bearing rattles on the post 1980 stub, And the outer bearing wont slide on.
The half shaft is the wrong shape and chews up the stub axle.
 
Find someone with good second hand parts - start a want to buy thread on this forum?

There are loads of us with unfinished Land Rovers who might be able to spare some bits / make some beer money to go drown our rebuilding rate disappointments...
 
The problem with advertising for parts is, that people want to give you the unwanted contents of their garage.
for example ...... I have a pair of outer half shafts but you have to take the rusted front end of the chassis as well.

More often than not that's a sign - an omen - the half shafts will probably be as bad as the chassis...

...I know of a geezer ('ere we go!) who breaks series 2 Land Rovers - I wouldn't be surprised if he had the right bits for you. I can check if you want me to - alternatively if you happen to be on the series 2 club forum I can pass on his user name there. He's not quite Poole - bit more M4 corridor (I think 'cos he says he'll do drop offs along that way) but might be worth a whirl...

If you want me to act as go-betweener send me a PM with what you need - ideally with part numbers - include your email address and I'll pass on your details to afore mentioned geezer via the series 2 club forum. Obviously - any agreement you might make with a third party has nothing to do with me - I is just a messenger / poor white pregnant orphan from Nigeria (etc etc)

I am still investigating getting the correct matching parts etc.
The inner half shafts are fitted on the earlier series I read. The outers half shaft pre 1980 need the early stub axle to match.
Do you have any opinion of Bearmach parts? They are ridiculously cheap compared to britpart and genuine parts.
Anyway we are going to play with the back axle just to get it rolling.
I am reading your project at the moment very interesting.
