Hi all, bought a series 2 a and need to order some parts from paddocks , but not sure what the bits are called and have a few questions etc...

i'm after the outrigger in the picture (the one near the wheel) as not sure what they call it on the website as theres no picture,
what is the correct name for this part please?

also the bulkhead is quite rotten , does this look like its needs a new one or would you say it is repairable? , i can weld /fabricate bits myself , but not sure it is worth the hassle , can you still get new ones?

also there is a little switch near the clutch pedal , i have seen other series with this switch , what is it for?

any help much appreciated , thanks

Hi Good luck with the build. The outrigger is the rear tub front outrigger at least that is what I call them. the bulkhead looks repairable to me and the switch is the headlamp dip switch.

Yes thats the one but a word of caution. I recently replaced all my outriggers. You will see on the top, there is the mounting bracket for the rear tub. Make up a length of metal bar and bolt it or tack weld it to this bracket and the other three support brackets then remove the outrigger, this will ensure you can replace the bracket in the correct position. The new outrigger does not have the bracket fitted so you will need to cut and dress up the old one. Good luck and keep posting photos of your resto'.

I see now , they do not include the bracket?
Yeah will make a project thread , as will have lots of pics

Thanks for advice

What is your chassis like on the whole? As looking at the pictures it might look solid but is it? Check first to make sure the chassis is strong enough, it would be a shame to spend money on new parts for nothing. Sorry to be the damp squid. ;)

i'm not sure you have a 2a, you may have a Series 2 there going by the vent opening mechanism

is it a complete vehicle or did you buy just what is shown in the photos ??

what year is it supposed to be ??

you can buy brand new reproduction bulkheads but they are more or less the same price as a chassis

if you're really interested in this motor and want some eagle eyed rivet counter pointing out details and helping you identify what you have i suggest joining the Series2 forum, there's two or three lads on there that really do know what they are looking at with the early S2's and will willingly help out with identifying your motor

to be honest i do not know enough about them to be sure it is a 2a , i just remember when i bought it , it being called a 2a , year is 1960,

thanks

chassis is quite rotten , it probably needs a new one TBH
, but that doesn't matter for the moment , as i have a cut down rangy chassis i was going to put the shell on, as i only use this for off road only, so it doesn't matter ,

but i will be restoring the original chassis, engine etc....

1960 will be a Series2 not a 2a, i think the Series2 was only produced for 5 years (maybe less) the S2 came out in 1958

it really would be worth you joining the Series2 forum especially if your motor is complete or near complete to assist you in identifying the oddities of a motor this early

there probably is quite a few oddities about this motor that you'll need to know about to assist you in getting the correct spares/replacement parts

edit...

just saw your intentions of using a rangy chassis under it, it's up to you of course :(

I will join series 2 forum as will help identify it (think i will keep quiet about the rangy chassis on there lol)

the cut down rangy chassis is just a temporary thing really , as its going to take at least a year for me to sort the original chassis /engine etc.. out ,

thanks for advice

unfortunately that link is very poor for identifying a Series2 and differentiating from the later 2a, the Series2 forum is far better as there is folks on there that will ask for specific photos and numbers to help with identifying, a mate of mine is interested specifically in the '58-'59 S2's, as are a couple of others and they really do know what they are looking at to pin down the various parts/identifiers

i've a '59 bitsa out the back of my place at present that i'm building, a '65 2a in my front garden that i built last year and a '70/'71 2a that is awaiting my attention, there is quite a few differences over that span of years, some of them just being small details that won't interest or be noticed by most folks but can be spotted by the real rivet counters

Hi

Welcome

If it's a 1960, it will be a series 2, 2A didn't come in till 1961.

Definately repair the bulkhead, new ones are a fortune.
Looks to me like you need door pillars and footwells to make that one good.

Also worth joining the series 2 club/forum, fantastic help on there.

thanks for the replies ,
so its a series 2 then , out of interested would this be worth restoring to original condition? i mean would it be worth anything when finished?

as was just going to put it on my cut down rangy chassis with 3.9 efi for now (offroad only, then sort the original chassis when i get time,

Are you kidding, a nut and bolt resto, keeping it as original as possible will be worth a few grand, probably 3 to 4. Look what they are asking in Land Rover International. I would love a 2 or 2a, I have a 2a chassis and it is going to be rebuilt from a scrapped 2a. I will keep it original as poss. Good luck.

maybe i should keep it original , where is the best place to get a chassis from?
thanks
