Nowhere near sorry, but take a plug out, reattach the plug lead and wedge it against the rocker cover stud in such a way you can see the plug gap. Have someone turn the engine over and you should see/hear the spark. Helps if its not bright and sunny

Is anyone from the Gloucestershire area around here and fancies taking a look ?!
Yep brakes don’t work and no idea what to do about that.
The engine turns over but doesn’t start… I don’t know whether it’s worth changing coil spark plugs etc as I don’t know when that was done …. Is there a way to check if they need changing ?
Where about in Gloucestershire?(general area is fine)
There are a few people in that county that may help.
Thanks

I’m so sorry for my ignorance. Ive always wanted to do up a Land Rover but it really is a starting / learning from complete scratch

Your Landrover 88 is 50 years old.
It will need some/constant loving care and attention to keep it running.

This will be a steep learning curve for you.
They are a great car to own and drive and part of their appeal is that they are relatively easy to work on.
You do need to know the basics though.
How the brakes work is (IMO) in that 'basics' category.

Asking on here with pictures, is always helpful to get the right answers/pointers.

It is a nice looking car (no it's not a truck) and in my favourite colour sheme 👍
When was it resprayed ?
Has the chassis been replaced ?

Hey ! No I haven’t and now the brakes don’t work . I’m considering getting rid . Maybe I’ve bitten off more than I can chew 😫 feeling gutted

Don't get rid you will love it 1 day :).

Its a simple engine to work on and understand. But I don't see in your post if you have even tried to do what has been suggested.

You only need basic tools. then ask here as you go through it, what tools do you have? Buy a cheap multimeter if you don't have 1.

As for the brakes, if they did and now don't chances are its lack of use and something just needs some lubrication/cleaning.

Check for fuel delivery first then spark.

Pics of engine bay will help other point you where to look.

Keep the faith. The lovely cars can be a right pain in the backside, but other times they are an absolute joy. (Bit like trying to grow a grass lawn over here in Australia).

I have just finished rebuilding my very first engine and I am now putting the Landy (called Sandy) back together again and I have just been getting the engine running for the first time thanks to these forums and the university of YouTube. They are pretty simple things and just need Air, fuel and a spark.

The best piece of equipment I have ever bought for cars is one of these (https://www.repco.com.au/tools-equipment/automotive-tools/auto-electrical-tools/toledo-in-line-ignition-spark-tester-302026/p/A9580045?kwSearch=Spark testerB) This is an Aussie shop, however UK will have them in all stores. Plug her in between the cable and a spark plug, get someone to turn the key and if it flashes, you are in a good place and you have a spark.

Air is pretty easy unless a bird has made a nest in your engine.

Next is fuel, and if you have a flashing light and no pigeons fly out when you lift the bonnet, then the "gunky shot glass" is probably your problem and fuel isn't getting to the engine. Someone on here will be able to help you out with that. I have a bit of a long drive from over here.

Let us know how you go though.

Todays update… It runs

Flat battery so out came the jump pack. Cranked a few times to check stuff.
Took out a plug.. spark
Cleaned rotor arm
Disconected fuel lift pump and nothing coming out manually & engine crank.
Rig up petrol can on wing straight to cab.
Jump leads and car used & the motor runs.
Forgot about lift pump when engine running but no fuel came out.

Will arrange for further visit if needed

That's a good result, wonder if the fuel pick up pipe is blocked?

Good test for that put that rubber pipe into can and suction side of pump and see what comes out when hand priming if nowt then pump needs attention
Proper glass bowl on the otherside was full. Bit nothing came out. And you know once you try to undo them brackets they fall apart
