Hello everyone,

I’ve joined this forum hoping that people are a bit kinder than than the Facebook landy forums…! So I don’t know the technical terms for anything so please bear with me 🙏

Hoping for some help with a 1974 series two that won’t start…. It turns over but doesn’t spring into action. I’ve put some fuel in today and will charge the battery but can anyone offer any other help please!

Thank you !

Are you sure it is a series 2? I ask as I thought s3 production started in early 70s?

Picture might help.

If it is a petrol is it sparking?

If it is a diesel is the stop cable pushed in?

It’s a petrol.
It’s been in the garage for 8 months 😩😳
There was some gunk in what looked like a glass shot glass which I cleaned out , undid the fuel pipe to see if when I started it up the fuel would come out but it doesn’t ..

I’m so sorry for my ignorance. Ive always wanted to do up a Land Rover but it really is a starting / learning from complete scratch

That's the fuel lift pump, if you disconnect the outlet side when the engine is turning over fuel should them squirt out.
It's possible it's knackered or the fuel line in and from the tank is blocked.
You could use a fuel can as a temp petrol tank, run a pipe from can to the lift pump and operate the lift pump lever to see if it pumps fuel through.
Be careful not to burn your landy to the ground!

Have a look for the series 3 workshop manual

Could be a pipe blockage too in tank so remove pipe from top of tank to see if end gauze is blocked
If lever does not work properly and pump the fuel through you may need to rotate engine 1/2 a turn

Welcome to LandyZone and congratulations on a lovely series 3.

I became an owner of a series 3 earlier this year and the forum has been invaluable.

If you don't know when the the ignition parts were last replaced, you might need to think about changing them.
Coil, spark plugs, leads and points, starter solenoid are quite cheap and easy to do yourself.

also the condenser thats one thing that would give me a lot of issues not so much the points, but the points over time would get a burn hole in the centre of mine thats all id ever have issues with.

So c'mon, did you get your wee beastie running again?🙂

Hey ! No I haven’t and now the brakes don’t work . I’m considering getting rid . Maybe I’ve bitten off more than I can chew 😫 feeling gutted
These old land rovers need constant fiddling with for a while, you will then hit a sweet spot and it will work fine, for a week then start again!
Only joking.
When we got the 2a, with a years mot, the fuel tank decided it only wanted to be half full before leaking out.
Had some stupid rad with the outlet on the wrong side, amongst many other things.
You have to put a bit of effort into and all will be good.

Yes definitely don’t give up. Half the fun 😬 is chasing down the various gremlins that pop up every now and again. I have found this forum very friendly and invaluable for help since buying my S3 in the spring this year. It’ll be like triggers broom when it’s finished but doesnt half put a smile on your face when it’s running well 😃

Is anyone from the Gloucestershire area around here and fancies taking a look ?!
Yep brakes don’t work and no idea what to do about that.
The engine turns over but doesn’t start… I don’t know whether it’s worth changing coil spark plugs etc as I don’t know when that was done …. Is there a way to check if they need changing ?
