Serie 3 Petrol cuts out when driving

I have a Serie 3 2.25 petrol from 1979. The car got serviced 1 monthy ago with new distributor, new carburettor etc. The car drove fine until one day whith not much fuel left in the tank I drove in 3rd gear then went into neutral and the car stopped. I drove in straight line for 200 yards, psaw a red light, pull into neutral gear and the engine just stopped. The engine stopped with no noise or shake, as if i had just turned the key in OFF position. Managed to start again with loss of struggle although car was hot. I changed fuel pump and saw lots of rust in the fuel. Cleaned my fuel tank. The car drove fine but then would not idle. It went worse to a point that not pressing the accelerator will mnake the engine to stall.

The next day, the car started shaking and stopping as if there was fuel starvation after 10 minutes drive. Managed to pull on the side of the road and got home with choke on. This symtpom happens happens at sometimes after 10 minutes or an hour. The car really struglles to accelerate or even drive.

What could be causing this?

rust in carbu, bad coil?

sounds like you have rust in the carb, strip it down and clean it
you might need a new fuel tank if its rusty inside, check for damp spots outside where patrol is soaking through the rust
