Semi-strange question - why L322 is a 'truck'?

A question from a first time RR or any SUV owner - why people in this and other forums refer L322 (specifically) as a 'truck'?

For me a 'truck' is F-150, Toyota Tacoma/Tundra, Dodge RAM, Chevy Silverado - you get an idea - any of them are larger than full-size L322.

Is L322 consturcted as a truck? Is (old) defender also a truck? Are Toyota LandCruiser, 4Runner, Rav4 or Sequoia a truck too? What are LR/RRs that are not trucks?

Curious to know where this came from and what people mean by 'truck'...

P.S. My wife (and now everyone pretty much in the family) calls our (OK - her) 2005 RR as 'FAV', where F is the first letter of her last name and AV - Assault Vehicle...

Because in the UK people think it is a big car so call them trucks, it really started a few years back when people started using pick up trucks as personal vehicles due to business rax incentives so all 4x4 then became trucks.

Interesing... were they referred by different term before that?

Ere in Devon, any 4x4 is known as “the truck”. When I worked my dogs, my colleagues all called my Jimny “yer truck”.

It's just perceived as 'cool'
It's just a car in reality, in the same way that Dave from Skegness is still a bloke even though he wears a skirt and calls himself Davina

Surely calling a RR a "truck" is a US thing ?

You must NEVER call them a jeep - because they are not, that is a make of SUV.
So the generic term became ‘truck’.

The thing is that on this side of the pond, people are not calling SUVs a truck. A 'truck' is either a pickup truck or something bigger - like Class 8 18-wheeler.

People are not calling large SUVs 'Jeep' either because Jeep is a class of its own.

It isn't a Truck, it's a car, the old Defenders are cars too, I might concede to a pick-up being called a truck but really trucks are lorry's, large vehicles designed to carry freight.

People (youths in the main and those easily led) that are (to my annoyance) calling landrovers 'trucks' really aren't that bright.
They are typically a sort of person that will ask someone else to 'check the oil' and take thier car to a garage to investigate a rattle.

agree about the j**p thing, but why would the alternative be truck? thats like going out for steak n chips, and asking for a plate full of curry

‘Car’ seems misappropriate
Can’t be ‘jeep’
The ‘4x4’ just sounds wrong

Car, Landie, rangie.. even 'range'.. i used to call my p38 'the bastard' though that's probably why the door tried to fall off

Try searching this website for "not a truck" including the quotes. Never called my Car a truck cos it isn't.

IMHO it's a US thing, not UK. Maybe the ypounger generation are influenced but they're wrong !!

Don’t think I’ve ever heard an L322 being called a truck tbh.

Defenders could easily meet your definition of “designed to carry freight”. Hard top and pick up variants. High Caps and then a host of tray back, box bed and other configs available.

Too big and heavy to be called a car. Drives like a truck IMO and the seats are worse than an IVECO
