When I first bought my 90 (1995 300tdi), I found a tiny toggle switch hidden up under the dash - above the switches on the right of the steering column.

No-one has ever been able to tell me what it is for - and it doesn't seem to be connected to anything (at least nothing happens when you switch it either way).

Anyhow, I was going through the paperwork the other day, and noticed it listed as an 'other item' on the Used Vehicle Order from Barretts of Canterbury (28/01/98).

Land Rover secret switch £40.00
Does anyone know what this was fitted for?

A work lamp.you should have some holes at the back where a work lamp has been maybe some riverts there instead. Also may find a relay in one of the back light boxes.

I usually paralell a switch of the 1st click on the ignition so I can leave power to the radio and 12v supplies without leaving the keys in.

If the engine is OFF does it stop anything working - like my isolator, if it gets knocked out when the car's running it dont make any difference coz the bits get all they need from the alternator but without it on the car wont start?

if it's in the metal part immediately under the dials that's kind of hidden and secret, it's the location for a fuel changeover switch in twin tank models. If I had a working scanner, I'd scan my (arabic) owners manual that shows it. Don't know if the picture is in the uk manual. It's a black on-off switch and there is normally a small sticker applied to the dash immediately above it showing two petrol pumps with a 1 and 2 next to them and arrows indicating what direction to switch the switch to make what tank operate.

The switch is £14 from dealers. The sticker £3 or so.

Sadly not a secret anymore.

I hope I will not have my stomach cut open and be buried in sand a cabletows distance from the sea.

right pasted a photo from another thread - if the switch you're talking about is the one just below dash and beneath windscreen wiper stalk, with (in this case) a picture of a light that is indeed the fuel tank switchover switch. Although you could use it to house any delta or lucas switch of the same dimensions..

That's the spot - where that switch is under the wiper stalk in the photo. Just to clarify what I'm talking about, on my 90 there is no surface mounted switch, but a tiny toggle switch up inside the hole - and although I doubt that my home counties swb has ever had twin tanks, I'm guessing that it is indeed the switch that Muddy has identified.

However, it turns-out that mine has been wired to a passenger ejector seat.
How do you get an angry woman out of a tree?
