hiya

as im working through redoing my interior i was thinking of just removing the passenger seat and clean it, so that i can carry on using the car

however will it create a fault with the electrics, pre tensioners disconnected and possibly set off the air bag

i see i have to disconnect the battery for about 10 mins, before unplugging the electrics

have got a hawk eye so can clear any codes but am i dicing with severe problems

is it safe or is it a no, no , to use the car with only the drivers seat in, whilst the passenger seat is removed and drying

sorry in asking a daft question but prefer to ask if im going to create a big issue

It wont set off the airbag, but your whole SRS system will be disabled and SRS warning lamp will be on with the passenger pretensioner unplugged.

It isnt very unsafe to drive around without a functional airbag system if you dont crash. But then again you never know if your gonna be in a head on collision ;)

It isnt very hard to take the pretensioner off the seat(one bolt if i dont remember wrong) and leave it plugged in. But you will need to mount it somehow.

thks so much for the advice, i think the best idea would be to do both seats and not use the car as i dont want to take the risk with regards to the srs system

i wasnt sure and sorry asking a daft question

i put a hose pipe over the rear seats when i took them out and have come up really nice , but know its not a good idea to do the same with the fronts seeing electrical wiring goes into them

think a steamer will be the best bet along with a good hoovering and upholstery cleaner

I drove round for a week with no airbag in the steering wheel because I needed a new squib.
Srs system not activated didn't bother me, only the 2nd car I have had with an airbag. I guess the pretensioners are handy in a crash so I just didn't crash for a week

I don't know how much electrics you have in yours, but I have considered jet washing my seats

the seats are two tone grey cloth, when i took the rear seats out no matter how much i cleaned them with upholstery cleaner and hoovered there were marks etc within the cloth material

just used a soft brush , washing up liquid and a hose pipe, they did take about a week to fully dry but have come up like new

regarding the fronts there are indeed wires going up to them, theres no heating element and to be honest i dont know what electrical connections are i side the front seats

i would like to do the same with the fronts regarding washing them through with a hose pipe but very concerned of damaging them.

found also when i done the backs the hose washed all the way through the sponge and cleared so much crap out and smelt better

will also be ordering some covers from britpart for fronts and back so they remain clean when i put them back in

got another black carpet now all spruced up ready to go, another non scratched dashboard, all carpet fixings etc, just got to take the plunge soon and remove all the old interior

also going to rub down the front seat sub frames and repaint the rails black again

I have electric seats etc in the front and drove mine with front passenger seat missing for a while. Also both front seats missing to put it in the garage it was in front of. Didn't have any problems with the srs light staying on or faults. Didn't disconnect battery. All ok. Just leave the engine/ignition oft when you do it.
 
I would of thought the wires would just be for the seatbelt pre tensioner and can be removed. Not 100% though but can't think what else it would be

as far as i know theres no heating element in the seats as i assume they have to be added

am i correct in saying that the job of the pre tensioners are to tighten up in the event of an accident

with regards to removing them could i damage them if i remove them , as by the sounds of it if i get them off i could indeed do the same as i did with the rear seats by washing them off with a hose pipe

as with a plan could do the passenger seat first, allow that to dry, then remove the drivers side and then get stuck in with the carpet, dashboard etc

has taken me quiet a while to get all the little clips etc as some were missing

took me a while also to get some carpet joining round clips second hand as new they cost 10 quid each and wasnt prepared to pay that , got 10 x second hand ones for a tenner

just want to make sure ive got everything to hand and hopefully then wont get any surprises

have sprayed the speaker grills black again and replaced the speaker foam

also read the dashboard comes out with its own wiring loom

now got hold of some self adhesive 10 mm square vent seals, off ebay on a roll

will of course take pics so it can help anyone in the future as a reference guide

hi mate

just out of curiosity do all freelander seats have the heating element fitted in them as standard plse

or is it just fitted to leather seats

the only reason i ask is all the wiring etc is there behind the switches but as mine are cloth seats didnt know if the heating elements were a standard item

how can u tell a seat has a heating element, would it just be the case of seeing if wires go into the seat etc plse

Not sure. My v6 2001 ES has heated seats. They is full leather too. Don't know if they were an option or standard on some models. I just looked through the 2001 and 2004 catalogues I post on ere and couldn't see them listed.

To make it easier for yourself get some proper seat cleaner. You won't need to remove them so no hassle.

If it has the wire hanging underneath then it has heated seats I think. I don't think if they're fitted to cloth seats. Only leather which is cold to sit on when it's cold. Cloth seat warm up quicker when you sit on them.
 
I have heated cloth seats. Black connector is heating and yellow is pretensioner. If you dont have the connector there is no heating element in the seat.

thks for the help, the only reason im taking the seats out is to replace the carpet and dashboard

know alot more now and appreciate the help

just going through a check list as i certainally dont want to start stripping it out and find ive got to order something , plus will be changing the heater matrix at the same time

Well I think it all boils down to having the heater button on your dash, if not they are useless with heaters in I reckon
 
Is there any other way to clean them thoroughly as hose pipin them seems rather to harsh to me imho

hi

funny enough all the wiring is there behind the blanks, it was the same when i put in the cruise control as all the wiring was there also

i agree with regards to the hose pipe being drastic, but when i took the rear seats out i tried a steamer, vacuum, cleaner, upholstery brush etc and everytime i hit the seat with my hand dust came out, put them in the garden on a sheet , used a soft brush, some fairy liquid and a hose pipe and couldnt believe all the crap etc that came out of them, came up like new, also the dog smell had completely gone

imagine the easiest way is to get a company to professionally clean them, or wash the covers seperatly ,

going to check what electrics the front seats have got first before a hose pipe goes near them.

if its just the pre tensioners will remove them and do the same as i did to the rears, as theyve got to come out anyway

checked under the seats, there are white connectors just hanging down not connected to anything

one on the passenger side and two on the drivers side, havent a clue what these are for

Those contacts are part of your wiring loom. I think the white ones are heated seats, grey might be cd changer?

thks buddy

always nice to learn something new, was great fun when i traced all the wiring out when i fitted the oem cruise control and certainally couldnt have done it without the sound advice i got from here

may i ask a daft question, if it is the wiring for the heated seats how do i know its actually got the element inside the seats, or can u actually see them please

something else ive learnt and didnt realise about the cd changer.

as always appreciate the help

Put a meter across the contacts and measure a low resistance through the element if it's fitted.
 
anybody has previous experience with hosing them before? do the metal parts inside the seats get a ****in?
