Seat bulkhead chequer plate question

Im after a slightly unusual bit of chequer plate.

What I want is a piece to basically blank off the recessed area of the seat bulkhead in the back of the landy.

So you've got the galvanised capping that runs across the top of the bulkhead. The factory aluminium panel is riveted to the cab side of that channel leaving a gap on the load bed side....still with me?

I'm after a straight/flat piece of plate to rivet to the load bed side of the capping channel that follows the contours of the tub up over the wheel boxes and around the barrelling in the side of the tub so it can be sealed.
I'm wanting to cut access holes behind the seats and make a large storage area

If you can follow that description does anyone know of anyone who makes such a thing?
I've converted a suzuki sj to truck cab before and made just such a panel so last resort I'll have a crack at it but the barrelling might be difficult so if the part already exists I may as well buy it I think

Cheers lads

Yes you would want to make it removable, that would mean rivetting an angle all the way around then screwing into that. Could be done by getting a sheet cut once you get a template. Not sure it would gain you a lot of space unless you cut very large holes in the bulkhead.

Yeah it will be removable, not easily but doable.

If I made a template I'd just make the panel myself...in a perfect world I was hoping someone doing chequer plate bed liners would already make one that fitted well enough and I could buy a whole kit and just ask them not to put a bend in the bulkhead panel

Given all the years of land rover accessory making I feel like someone must sell something suitable.
A quick look online didn't show any pictures clear enough to tell so thought I'd ask on here before emailing companies

If its extra srorage you want why not get an old fuel tank, cut the top off and fit it in the aux tank position. Instant tool box and no buggering about.

Already replaced one of the twin tanks with a tool box.

No buggering about? Then why buy a land rover lol

Agreed, moving back the bulkhead looses a vital 3-4" of floor lengh. On my LWB the sides are 6ft but the floor is 3" longer which is really handy as 2m planks fit with the dood shut. Since you clearly know how to make bits there's a few areas that you can exploit:
Under the seats (as Rodeo Joe says),
Under the centre seat - i have a tool box there.
Above the screen, I have a shelf - about 6" deep.
On the doors
Though the side, - my LWB has side lockers both sides
A neat trick is to make a hatch in the tub floor to a box underneath.

Passenger tool box, done
Center tool box, done
Above the screen, don't fancy that
Doors, too wet
The last two, it's a swb truck cab and it's cab storage I'm after

Sooooo......anyone know anything about chequer plate bulkhead liners?

I'm not giving up yet...
I have a home made roof rack (repurposed ally step ladders.) that's turned out to very handy, got an ally box at an army surplus place bolted to it so its dry.
Don't knock the headliner shelf, its very easy to reach while you are driving. I also have some mesh pockets on the roof sides above the doors.
Bonnet mounted spare - I've seen those with BBQ's in.

Don't forget to bolt an old army ammo box to the recess in front of the rad.

Ha ha! I have that already. I also have:
a larger one that bolts to rivnuts on the rear door.
a tool tray over the passenger footwell
a storage tray on top of the battery.
army surplus map cases fitted inside the front doors
army surplus ruck sacks that clip to the roof rail
We have stuff everywhere, but you have to to camp in a Series as there is so little floor space.
Our target is to get 3 nights (a long weekend) with everything put away, we are still some way off.
I've got my eye on the space under the passenger floor plate. Could make a small lift up lid and box underneath

Is this what you aspire to or are trying to get away from?

i needed space on last years trip and made a topshelf for tub that sits on the inner rails with a closed end above the seats shaped for a snug fit around
top shelf.JPG

the inner roof out of 18mm ply, had camping chairs, tent and other bits in there and slides out when not in use

I would say take every bit of kit out of your land rovers divide into two piles and throw one of them away...you're hauling too much gear troop!

Have springs will use em...... They handle better with weight on the back axle. ;)

I agree with both of you:
I will never again take 2 bicyles AND a boat on a 3 day camping trip, one or the other, never ever both. One cuddely toy, that's it, they do not get lonely and we do not need two more to keep the first company, end of.
But, boy can you load up a LWB on heavy duty springs......
