************* help ************** HELP ************* help ***********

Hi all, hope you all had a nice xmas. I have been laying under the landy under water for most of it. I seam to have a nasty scratching noise coming from the gearbox area. It sounds like two bits of metal just scraping eachother, the kind of noise that makes your teeth go funny. I think it is mainly when i come off the power and coast sitting back on the gears however it has happened at other times too. All gears work no ptoblem. Because i have noticed that i mainly happens when coasting i have been taking the car out of gear and just coasting however the noise contines....... Any ideas will be greafully received.

Tom

remove pto cover plate from transfer box. six bolts . check unput shaft bearings ! if good then pack with grease and move on "!!! the back bearing can run dry due to poor design causing whine and screeching noise !!

This is the same noise I'm getting. Did you ever work out what it was?

New to Landies what on the gear selector unit could make the noise?

Ok I'll try it without the front prop see if that cures it.

If it does I assume it's the front Diff?

Spent a lot of time recently on gear boxes chasing noise.Recently changed to high ratio transfer case and shimmed the intermediate gear as per manual and now a lot quieter suspect that gears where moving laterally when powered on or off .Nearly every box I stripped had wear on the brass faced shims that sit either side but also no extra shim fitted to reduce movement.

Poking around underneath oil is leaking from the transfer case front output flange so I'm gonna change the bearing and oil seal as reading around a few have had similar noises and changing this cured it.

Also gonna change the rear A Frame BJ and front prop, and check the gearbox output shaft for wear (already changed the rear prop)

That way I've now eliminated the obvious, cheap and easy stuff and I know it's one of the boxes or Diffs.

Dirty bodge is to fit just a new input gear, wont last forever and doesnt take all the play out, but makes a decent improvement

Nah its in having a new box, cross drilled gear and a few other bits on the transfer box, £1100 fitted for the lot. Get it back Monday :D
