Scrap or not to scrap?

Hi Guys,

Just put my 2001 D2 'Daisy' through the MOT today and she failed... badly.

1. Steering box has significant oil leak.
2. Offside Rear wheel bearing rough when rotated.
3. Offside rear/nearside rear vehicle structure has excessive corrosion seriously affecting its strength wtithin 30cm of body mountings.

The steering box I knew about and I had a suspicion about the wheel bearing; however the rear chassis legs are goosed... looks like a PO has filled them with silicone, then undersealed over the top to make them look like good metal. They basically look like they're splitting down the middle on either side of the fuel tank.

Also had advisories for corrosion to rear brake hose ferrules, front cradle rotten, underseal covers all brakepipes and an oil leak.

Testing station are advising me to get rid of her, but I only bought her a few months ago for £2k and in that time I've become a little attached!

Just wondered what you guys thought? Is it worth repairing or should I just get rid?

2k is a big hit to take

Wheel bearing shouldn't be too expensive or difficult. Will let others advise about steering box....
You know you can't let her go without trying....

Keep it. Otherwise if everyone scraps them, there will be none left!

No 1. most do that "if theres no oil leaks on your drive" then you don't own a landy
No 2 new hub £40/50 takes les than a hour to do "even for a numpty"
No 3 " we call that surface rust" always cover every thing in black /paint /grease oil pigeon ****.. any think that darker than rust..
No 4 welcome to the would of landyzone

I fitted one of these, remove the rear plastic bumper and drop the fuel tank, cut existing chassis 50mm longer than new section and fit new section over the existing chassis rails, bolt into floor mounts then weld, altogether about 6 hours work, and only the 2nd time I had done welding.

Quick update... After a load of welding (thanks bigg), new track rod, new wheel hub and a steering box... Then some more welding at the mot station, daisy lives to fight another day. Full mot, no advisories, and no cash left in the bank. Big smile on my face tho.

I had the exact same failure in mine. Wondering if it is worth while drilling a hole there at the deepest point?

If my chassis ever got to the point that there was nothing to weld to, then I think this is a good option
