good day everyone;
Again apologies all around for my blatant ignorance when it comes to land rover engines, but i am new to these vehicles, and i need to learn.
I am in the market for another defender as the one i had before, i had to back out on the deal.
I am living in Costa Rica right now, so there are a few defenders on the market, but not a whole lot to choose from.
I've got my eye on this red beauty, she's a 1997 defender 110.
It has a/c, so it doesn't have the typical dash where you can open up the air intake flaps, as these aren't cut out in the bulkhead and are closed from the factory.
My issues right now, are determining which engine is which.
I cannot tell which engine it has, but i'm slowly leaning towards a 300tdi.
being in central america, the possibility of having an international engine from brazil could be a potential, but again, i'm not sure what to be looking for to tell them apart.
Could anyone post pictures of the differences, or let me know how to tell them apart.
Much appreciated.
Cheers

Do you mean the TGV 2.8?

does the 110 have a manual or auto box?

I find it strange that a 1997 110 has no vent flaps in the bulkhead. only the later pumas (>07) have these. Something you need to question.

I think the 2.8 engines have the air intake and box in a different place to the 300 and the distributor pump is mounted at an angle, not level.

yes i do mean the 2.8 tgv.
the defender i am looking at has a manual tranny.
as for the vent flaps, this is because it has a/c. the dashboard has the vents where the flaps are on defenders without a/c.
i've seen this on a # of models now, and is different than some of the new styles.
it still looks like it has the air vent flaps, but they are just not cut out and able to open.

It will either be the ROW 300tdi or the 2.8TGV.

I hear the torque from the 2.8 can shred R380 gearboxes.

PERFORMANCE COMPARISONS

LR ‘200’ & ‘300’ Tdi International HS2.8 TGV

Displacement :- 2,495 cc 2,785 cc
Maximum power :- 111 bhp @ 4,000 rpm 135 bhp @ 3,800 rpm
Maximum governed rpm 4,000 4,000
Maximum torque :- 195 lbf ft @ 1,800 rpm 277 lbf ft @ 1,400 rpm

It is a better engine though.

post up a piccy of the enjun & the dashboard we will be able to tell yuo for sure.

Sean: will the 110 be ok tomorrow for room ;)

The blocked off flaps was normal for A/C for many years. I suspect, but may be totally wrong, that that will show it's not a TD5 as I think that is when they went to the protruding grill for AC.

A photo of the engine would make identifying it far easier.
