Hi All,

I have yet to buy a Disco. I am looking and have found what I believe to be a nice one, 2001, Tdi, auto, 90k, maroon fsh, Mondial alloys, full leather etc. I have spoken to the previous owner who obviously looked after it having waxoyled the underside, changed to coil suspension and clearly spent a lot of time polishing it! To me it doesn't look like a Disco that's ever been off road.

Thing is, I am rubbish at all things mechanical and have researched the internet and found all the Disco horror stories. It would be my primary mode of transport for family etc, so would need something that would be fairly reliable. My wife has a 10 plate Audi A5 Conv. and that has been to the garage 5 times for various leaks and so I suppose one can never really tell but over all some reliability would be good!

I can't decide between the Disco or a Forester, so I thought I would see if you guys could provide me with some honest feed back. My local Landy specialist reckons they are actually pretty good, but all advice would be gratefully received.

Sorry if its the same old newbie questions!

Kind regards,

Paul.

Buy it... they are marvelous things, its not all horror stories, as you mention regarding the A5
I swopped to L/R 5 years a go after having Japenese 4x4's and will stick to them after some shocking repair bills to some new vehicles I owned.

Hi Paul, fugitive from Bristol here :) Which end are you?

I'd say go for it. I've had my Disco 2 for almost two years trouble-free, and I knew the previous owners had no problems either for ten years. TBH at this stage, the really crap ones have died, and what is left is the best of the bunch (usually...)

These aren't cars that you use and forget in between though. Be prepared to check fluids, change oil regularly, listen out for things. It's a bit more work than a Ford Kasi, but ultimately much more rewarding.

I actually live in a small village halfway between Bristol and Gloucester. Probably not as nice as the lake Geneva shoreline!

Thanks for the advice. Like I said the only thing holding me back is lack of mechanical knowledge. Oh and the reputation they tend to come with. Undoubtedly the disco I have seen is a nice truck. They want £5200 for it which seems a fair enough price bearing in mind the condition and mileage. I got underneath it and I'd be surprised if its ever been off road.

I'll probably go and see it again tomorrow and let you know.

Or I'll bottle it and buy a Forester!

Yup Def buy. I've owned this one my 2nd Disco for just over a year and I used to say my old Disco 1 was my best car but I love my Discovery 2 everyday I drive it I love it more. Ps just done 125 mile drive in it today.

What mileage has it got on it?

 how much £5200 you could get a facelift for that money

they are over priced then, I bought a 2001 td5 d2 3 months ago for £2200 and it had just had 1200 spent on its mot, 108k 7 seats top es spec leather all the toys

Bargain! I've searched ebay and autotrader and I can't find anything decent for that price. Plus I want something with less than 100k. Although I have just found another one for £4500 with 88k on the clock.

looks like I dropped on with mine, it was advertised on gumtree for 2500, I had to meet them at the lr specialist that did the mot work as that was where the disco was.
I think they needed the money as soon as I paid for it they gave 1170 to the garage owner for the mot work

Don't get a Forester. They are great cars, but soulless. A Rover will be as rewarding as a dog (there's a reason for the name...). Treat it right, and it will be as loyal as a Collie. Treat it wrong, and it will bite you in the arse...

And thats what worries me! I had a Z1000 once. Sold it cos that to was soulless. I bought a Ducati instead. Can't ride it in the rain!

get the Forester! then with the change buy a series 2 TD5!! then make your mind up!! i have mine as it's what i am used to! on my 5th now!!! gluten for punishment!!!
i have a toyota van also, bomb proof!!!! 7 yrs old, reliable is an understatement! but **** off road, Grass n mud a no no! the disco has the looks for a 4x4, so it's for me! i like it, so thats my story!!

Mines is an 01 with 80k on the clock. It has always had what it need doing to it with no great thought to cost. Which hasn't been anything major to be honest. Waxoiled every year. Polished and immaculate inside and out. Its a top of the range with all the bells and whistles. I like to think its still worth five grand (what I paid for it in 08) because of how I've looked after it. But it isn't. Current market up here I would struggle to get 4k I think. No matter to me however cause I love it and its staying wae me.:D

Disco 2 would be my choice. had mine for 2 years now and at the moment can't think of anything else I'd rather drive. As was said earlier, look after it and it will look after you. Oh time for another drive in it!!!
