Hey!

So got my first Landrover Discovery 96 the other day... When I was driving along I noticed the diff lock light coming on when it wasn't in diff lock.

This weekend I checked the diff lock out, it works as it should I tested this by putting one wheel off the ground and seeing if it spins etc. all works fine but the light stays on even when diff lock isn't on.

Can anyone suggest what it is? I know for a fact it ain't in diff lock... Maybe a sensor?

Other problem, I stripped out the dash as I had a leak. After putting everything back the SBS light has come on and the last S appears to flash a little. I checked all cables that I touched but all seem ok.

My question is I did have the radio on etc while I was working on car and the battery went flat, could this cause the light to come on and do I just need it resetting or have a done something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm pretty much stuck!! I've looked over the forum but I don't think anything applies to what I've said.

Cheers!!

The diff lock switch is exactly the same as the reverse light switch, and on the discovery 1 the two wires run together down the back of the engine to the gearbox/diff. The wires can be shorted together or the power feed wire shorted to earth somewhere. It sounds most likely it's behind your dash, but on my first Discovery the wires had rubbed on the back of the block and shorted out. Try unplugging the wires off the diff lock switch and if the light is still on you have a short. If it is not still on, the switch is faulty or it is actually stuck in diff lock.

Cheers for your help! Sounds like the switch then, I disconnect the wires from switch and light goes off. And I've checked its not in diff lock.

Is the switch a case of unscrewing and screwing new one in? Seems pretty hard to get to :-/

Thanks again!

They are adjustable on a long thread with a lock nut. It may just need adjusting. It may be worth taking it out and testing it first and then if it's ok, fit it back in properly. I think you wind it in with the diff unlocked until the light goes out. When lock is selected, the switch plunger springs out and the light comes on. Don't over tighten the switch or it will puts the lock on. If you need a new switch, don't buy a cheap (blue box) one. You will be lucky if it stays in one piece while being fitted.
