Salvageable chassis? Will a new xmember cure this tin worm?

Sounds mad but when I fitted a new crossmember I had it galved first before fitting that way I will never have to do that ****e job again, 90 quid from memory, hardest bit was cutting off the old one, the rest was pretty painless.

 
So, its repairable, at a cost. I guess anything is, if you have the cash.

New rear x member with long legs that include the antiroll bar mounts and fuel tank mounts.
New fuel tank (I knew it was leaking, as its all damp). About 10 hours work.

I'm all over it with the Mecoil to soak in for a couple of days, but hopefully I will get the towbar and flaps off tomorrow ready for someone more able than me to do the rest later in the week

Things that make me feel better:
1. Its only money
2. There are no pockets in a shroud
3. beer
 
IMHO, its almost always worth spending money on the electronic free zone vehicles - given that, if looked after, they will outlast just about everything else on the planet.

Thats the opinion of the garage too - but it might end up like Triggers broom.....

Aye, it might - but what else are you going to buy with anything like the same abilities and lack of electrical gremlins?
We're running D1's - they are our "forever" vehicles - we have had our fill of electronic sh*te, and if we had stayed with D1's before we had a new RR, and a new ni$$an and a new pe*geot - the money we would have saved would repair D1's for the rest of our lives !!!!:mad::mad::mad::rolleyes:

We lost £18K on the ni$$an alone - repairs a D1 for a while, does that:(:rolleyes::eek:o_O

Taking bits off today in preparation - only managed rear step and towbar wiring :( rear member is rotten! One bolt for the step came away with a part of the member......

Got to be worth getting a small hammer and checking the rest of the chassis very thoroughly?
 
I went around mine with a hammer this weekend, wish i hadn't :(

Lots of mild steel on order, i think my chassis will end up around 20-30% patched/ replaced.


Cor you picked the wrong time of the year to be laying under a motor fabricating!
 
Bit of a no brainer for me, you could spend a couple of grand getting yours fixed and then you know you've got a good un. Or you could take a hit on selling it on because that chassis is now really obvious and then spend loads more beer tokens getting another that may/wont be as good as your original once repaired.
