Under my landy
After having it sat by my shed for about 6 months i've finally got round to work on a Salisbury rear axle.

Questions:

1. Are the brakes the same?

2. Any suggestions for how to get a stuck brake drum off? Short of taking an angle grinder to it and buying a new one... I've backed the brakes off on the adjuster but just can't get it to shift. The screw was knackered, but, i've drilled that out and am satisfied it is all ok for letting it come off.

3. I need to change the pinion bearing - but when i try and undo the main nut it just rotates the axle - short of putting the axle on the land rover on wheels, any easy way to stop it moving?

Thanks :)

drums have threaded holes 5/16 unc iirmc ,brakes just fit salisbury ,two types std and h/d ,pinion bearings should be changed in pairs to do the job right ,nut is tight and will need bar making up to hold in two holes to hold it ,there is a collapseable spacer that you crush with nut to set preload on pinion bearings

Thanks James... ever a fountain of knowledge.

Just to check, do you mean there are holes in the drum you can screw 5/16th unc bolts into to assis with removal?

If the screw into the drum doesn't work you should be able to free the drums by using a club hammer on the outer circumference of the drum. It's probably stuck to the shoes and a bit of mechanical shock should free it. The pinion nut can be a bugger. There is a special tool, but I've held the flange by putting a couple of bolts in adjacent holes, slipping a ring spanner over one bolt and putting the spanner shaft under the other bolt. Slide a length of tube over the spanner. With the right size spanner you should still be able to fit the socket on the nut.
