Dammit ... I knew it was too cheap to be true!

No - this gearbox is like a traditional RWD car gearbox, in that the sliding section is on the splines directly in the back of the gearbox. The whole prop is free to move back and forward in & out of that tin shroud on the 'box.
 
Mmmm. I've kept maximum deflection angles to a minimum by having the gearbox pointing directly at the centre of the diff at mid-travel of the suspension. Worst case at full compression and full extension of the suspension is just short of 20deg on the yokes, which the yokes will take.

It's shorter than I'd like, but I can't get the engine any further forwards (it's already hard up against the front crossmember, which I've had to notch out slightly to clear the front pulley).
