todays update.........

a few days off for Easter, so I thought I'd carry on with welding practice.

waste of time !!!!

I couldn't do anything. No penetration, had blobs of weld everywhere, most of which would come off by picking them, tried all different settings .......... failed miserably :(

A few hours on the interweb, and it would appear my gas has run out.

but.......Found a supplier of Adams Gas nearby, so tomorrow I'm going round to get me a 9L bottle. :)

got gas !!!! :)

got all the bits needed to make it fit !!!! :)

pulled the mig trigger ..........

...................

gas ****ing out over my hand through the trigger button :(

opened up the gun and there's sealant everywhere. :(

* must have a word with brother about buying welders at car boot sales *

so,

spoke nicely to missis, and with birthday coming up in September ........

we're off to Machine Mart on Sunday to get a new Clarke 150 @ 15% off. :)

blue or red ???? so many decisions !!

so today. I've been rubbing down the footwell and gave it a coat of fertan, ready for painting.

hi Trax

thanks for the help, but I think bro' is going to keep the knackered welder under the bench ....... for gasless use.

......plus, I like the idea of a nice shiny new one !!!!

I've had a look at weldequip, and for what I want to do, they are a bit too out of my price range.

fair enough, i'd also have a quick look on ebay for a used good brand.

a good brand will have new parts available to fix it up if needed.

upto you though ;)

todays update.

got new welder sunday.

been practicing on my new 1.6mm sheets.

so today I tried to weld a bit of the old wing onto the new metal

tacked the old bit

looked ok to me.

underneath

so, tried to weld them together ......

not good.

looks like tomorrow will be spent doing more testing.

your gonna learn to pulse weld.

welding with the current higher, the trigger is pulsed quickly, second on/second off/second on etc.
sometimes you'll get 3 or 4 seconds on, couple of seconds off, all depends on the gap your filling and the thickness (or lack of it) of the steel.

the holes on your practice work would be easily fillable, tho with time you'll be able to see when the holes going to blow, and either adjust your pulses to shorter weld, longer cool off, or stop the weld and restart againg half an inch away, going back after to weld the gap.

you've some nice looking welds there, inc the tacks. what welder have you got?

nrg.......its a Clarke 151te.

.........and that's the lowest setting !!

will have a go at pulsing tomorrow.

Thor........I'm avvin trouble doin the front step, never mind the back step !!!!

*off to google back step*

Not that easy to blow holes in 1.6mm at the lowest amp setting I would have thought, unless you are holding the gun over the same spot for too long. I have never needed to use pulse welding with a MIG, just make sure the gun is never stationery, except for tack welds of course. Even for plug welds, you keep it moving in a circular motion, I seem to remember.

also, arn't disco panels more around 1.2mm? if so you might find yourself blowing holes discoside until you get the hang of it :)

Yes, that's the problem I've got.
I've practiced loads welding the 1.6 steel, and am quite happy with the results.
It's the welding 1.6 to steel from the old wing ( 1.2) that I need to practice now.

try to stay longer on the thicker steel or buy some 1.2 :D

lol............i've got a grinding/cutting disk shape in my index finger 2nd joint.

didn't go to the bone though, and remarkably, didn't bleed much or hurt .......... yet.

teach me not to wear gloves !
