I have had the cylinder head off and am putting it back together.

Now the engine starts with a great deal of difficulty...chucking out white smoke, runs for a minute or so then stops!

I am running out of ideas now - but it just occurred to me.

I bagged and numbered all my injectors (1 to 5) in separate bags with clamps and bolts. And I am now wondering if on reassembly I put the injectors on in the reverse order in error (starting from the back of the cylinder head instead of the front) - would this be causing me the problem in trying to start and run?

All help and advice very very welcome.

Did you have it skimmed and hot crack tested? as they are known to only show up as cracked when hot.
as far as I'm aware coding improves running- but shouldn't make it not run at all.

if you try fuel purge sequence - does it run again?
 
@fanatic hi there and thanks for your quick response...it had a cracked injector housing in no 1 cylinder and I sent it away to a specialist for repair and after it was repaired it was pressure tested for 24 hours.

As regards skimming the guy who did the repair said he checked the head and it didn't need skimming.

And yes, if I do the fuel purge sequence again - it will eventually start...but cuts out after a minute or so.

does it sound gurgly near fuel pressure regulator? Ratty had cracked head and it needed heating to show fault.

I would suspect if repaired and not heated during testing- there may still be an issue.

I take it new injector washers and o rings fitted as matter of course and injector and head immaculately clean?
 
I fitted a brand new genuine LR pressure regulator.

When it had a cracked fuel injector housing it started and run and towed my small caravan brilliantly...the only reason I knew there was an issue was because I kept checking the oil level and it was increasing (filling up with diesel).

Genuine LR injectors and O rings fitted and injector seats were re cut and clean.

If you can find anyone with a diesel compression tester- that would be my first thought.

when you took head off did piston rings get any water near them? as it sounds like un burnt fuel or coolant.

as a matter of course- recheck timing and red ecu plug for oil- process of elimination.

These faults are annoying.
 
I will see if I can find somebody with one of these. But when I turn the engine over by hand it seems to have a lot of compression in it.

Yes - you can smell it - it is unburnt fuel due to trying to start the engine.

New injector harness was also fitted, plug cleaned with break and clutch cleaner, rechecked timing yesterday as per book with two timing pins, one in flywheel and one in camshaft - all correct.

I like the process of elimination thinking...that is exactly what I am doing although I am running out of things to eliminate. :/

Tomorrow I will swap round the injectors in case I mistakenly started from the back instead of the front.

Any other suggestions very welcome as I am plain out of ideas after that.
 
the injector coding would just make it run bad not stop it to start or cut out...are you sure you didnt mix the fule lines at the FPR?

imo before you play with the injectors make sure you have 4 bar there by inserting a gauge instead of the temp sensor in the FPR

and run the purging procedure at least 3 more times... after my head was off(due to a stuck glowplug which broke in) and seals replaced i was forced to purge it 5 times till all the air was out and ran nice

Thanks for this I will certainly check the fuel lines as I wasn't aware they could be wrong way round (although I did fit a new pressure switch which had pipes attached).....and will leave the injectors for the time being. The pump does scream when turned on but does quieten eventually so I will run the purge process again :)
