Yup. Going GKN. It was a stupid move in the first place, seeing as even top quality bearings and exactly the most expensive part of the drive train!
 
The end bit does slide back and forth to allow the engine to rock, which in turn rocks the gearbox and ird. If it's pull oft too far then check there is a cir clip on the end.
 
I don't recall seeing a circlip, but it may have been disguised in the mass of grease.
It's all in my dads garage at the moment, so I'll have to check it out again next time I'm up there
 
I've added a note to one of the pic's in the fred I linked to above. It may not show up for a few hours but it's there.
 
After checking out my picture again (the one attached to a post above), I think I can see the circlip...so I'm guessing that the CV and front prop are all hunky dory.

Bearing in mind that the bearings were cheap s**t (I think they were £15 each) and got smashed to bits after about 10 minutes, would that cause my rumble...also would the stiff VCU be a contributing factor to them breaking down so quickly?
 
On a fairly related note...if I'm buying aftermarket parts i.e. the bearings, props, VCU...what's the best brand to go for? If I get all GKN, it's going to cost in the region of £900. There are some other brands on www.island-4x4.co.uk (my local parts dealer) such as Bearmach and some genuine LR stuff...what's the best option in terms of quality and price?

I'm getting my VCU and bearings from Bell Engineering, VCU £200 with with bearings £248 & £20 next day delivery plus a free collection of the old VCU (trade in)

Damaged Bearings can cause a rumble. Sort of depends if there's any broken bit's inside the race where the bearings live, or the race itself is broken causing the bearings bot to run round smoothly. It's possible to damage bearings when fitting them if yer don't push the inner most race/bit when putting the bearings on. Pushing any other part of it will cause it stress it doesn't need.
 
I'm pretty familiar with Bell now, spoken to one of the guys there. My ponderment is...do I get a refurb VCU for £200, or get a new GKN one for £280. Can the refurbs be considered 'as new'?
 
A recon is just that. Reconditioned to a spec the reconner believes is correct. Many have them on ere from multiple reconners. They tend to be slightly less stiff which reduces some of the pressure on the drive train. New is new.
