Rumble vibration at 40mph

Hi all,

It's my first time here so please be gentle

I have a w reg Defender 90 and ever since I took it on a fairly long journey a couple of weeks ago, I'm getting a rumble/vibrating sound from the front whenever I slow down through 40 mph and sometimes 30mph. Pushing the clutch in seems to stop the noise. The vibration can be felt through the brake pedal.

Any ideas what it could be?

i take it you only get this rumbling when braking. or is it when ever you slow down braking or not? it might be wheel bearings but i can't see the relationship to it going away when the clutch is depressed..

I think it's only when braking though I rarely slow down without breaking.

Just been out for a spin. Here's the conclusion:

The rumble does occur when slowing down without applying the brakes as it does if you do apply the brakes.
The rumble does not occur when slowing down if the landy is not in gear.
The rumble happens consistently when slowing through 40mph and lasts for around 3 seconds (saying when going from 41mph to 38mph).

Hope someone can help further.

Have you checked for radial play on the prop shafts?

sounds summat like the propshaft or on the front axle somewhere.
strange that you can feel it on the brake pedal.

It's the only happening at certain speeds bit that gets me with brakes on or off, my monies on somthing loose in the suspension or steering department.

I have a similar problem on my '93 110, only it comes from the back and happens between 60 & 50mph. It's difficult to tell on the dual carriageway, but it sounds like it's in the region of the rear diff. Happens when the engine is doing the braking, though not accelerating, & can't feel anything through the brake pedal either.

Any assistance with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

i have found my problem today, mine is the forward facing bearing from the transfere box. i chacked this when i had agreased everything about a month ago and only had rotational play in the shaft but now its goes up and down and side to side but mine only happend when i was accelerating.

This problem drove me mad with my 2003 TD5!

The rumbling/grinding noise was heard when accelerating or deccelerating through 38mph or 53mph and was felt through the accelerator pedal.

After much trial and probing it turned out that the front right spring was setting up a harmonic with the natural frequency of the engines' running vibrations at these speeds. You can replicate the rumbling by jacking the vehicle up and giving the spring a whack with a hammer.

Simply rotating the spring through 90 degrees got rid of the problem completely.
