rubbing drums

went to fit some new drums to to my landy this morning but i hit on a problem. when i put the new drums on they turn freely but as soon as i put the drum retaining screws in the drum locks solid as tightening the screws makes the drum come into contact with the back plate.
i can't even turn it with the wheel on.(brake adjusters backed right off)
now have i gone and got some badly machined pattern part drums or is this a common problem and if so how do i rectify it?.
any advice would be welcome.

Hi Garyrigden.
Are you sure it is not the edge of the shoe touching the sloping ridge inside the drum?
Perhaps it has not been machined out properly. A common fault with pattern parts. Some are good but some can be rubbish.

i put the wheel on and moved the landy along my drive,which it stuggled to do and when i removed the drum you could see scoreing on the backplate and drum where they had been rubbing together.

Hi Garyrigden.
If the scoring is all around the back plate then the drum could be too wide, but if the scoring is only at the top of the backplate, perhaps the wheel bearings have play.(Its only a suggestion). The 1st is the most likely as the old drum did not rub.

the scoreing is all the way round the drum and the lip of the backplate.it looks to me as though the drums are just a poor casting.

Measure the depth of the drums old and new if they are the same then check your brake shoe steady posts are adjusted correctly. If not they could be causing the problem. Hope this helps.-----BB
