Hi all. Search engine doesn't seem to be working so this may have been covered, apologies if so.
Just wondered if it would be posible to convert a 'G' or 'H' sufix LT77 from a Disco or RRC to fit in a defender with the short bell housing. I know the shaft is a different length and would need changing as well as doing something to change shift leavers, but could it be done?

It's a Fender, therefore anything is possible!

The LT77 is one of the standard boxed fitted to just about anything, including the old-style London Black Cabs.
All you need to do is check that the bell housings are the same and it should drop straight in.

yes if you use the input from a 56a g or h defender lt77, youd also need the adapter from ashcrofts to fit the defender gear box top

Hi Oldseadog, thanks for reply. No, the bell housings, and therefore shafts on the Range Rover box are definitely longer than the 90 box. Obviously way beyond my skills. Just wondering if it's a possibility for someone with correct tools and skills (like @jamesmartin )to change shafts length but keep all the stronger internals. I have a 50A suffix D box also with a shorter bellhop sing to transfer.

Ha, like you read my mind Mr Martin. Think I need to pull the old box that's in there now and throw the pair of boxes, bell housings and all at someone competent and say 'make it work please'.
Cheers gents

you couldnt do it with a 50a shaft though, has to be 56a due to teeth number, rrc disco and defender 56a have 22 teeth ,50a has 21 teeth

Sh*t!!
That will mean hunting around for a suitable clutch to fit too then!
Will the transfer box I currently have mated to the 50A fit with th 56A G box?

why, it would be a standard tdi clutch like stc8358 ,fits defenders disco and rrc,t/box will fit any ,the difference between 50a and 56a is basically the input teeth number

I'm hoping it would be that easy, but the box is mated to a 3.6 VM HR 692 HT Motori engine and nothing has been straightforward so far so who know's what clutch is in there

I'm goin to presume that the block is the same as the old RRC 2.4/2.5VM blocks. So my next question would be, does anybody know if the clutch plate out of the later tdi is the same size as the VM clutch plate or, (and fingers really tightly crossed), is the whole clutch cover and plate interchangeable bolt spacing wise?

Also not 100% but I reckon its joined via an SD1 bell housing with a bit smashed/cut out for starter.
Starting to think it might be cheaper/easier to just buy a 300tdi disco with R380 and wrestle everything in. What do you think?
