I am very confused
just going through the oils on the range rover, checked the old haynes manual, it has the old three speed box, it has a borg warner transfer box

I drained the old oil-around 3 lt of very dark atf-manual says hypoid 90?? does it have the wrong oil, or does the borg warner use a different oil?

scratching my head-any help much appreciated

Tony

You are confused?
So am I as a '87 RRC had neither a 3.9 engine, a 3sp auto, or a BW transfer box o_O
Good point, in the lt tradition I suspect this is a mongrel! Does anyone know which oil is required for the Borg Warner transfer box, or does it depend on the model
Bw 13-61-003?

Have you checked what it says in RAVE?

I don't know about yours but the later P38 had ATF3 in the BW transfer box. Filled until it dripped out the fill hole.

As norseman says for the model year the engine & both gearboxes are wrong so it sounds like it's had a lot done to it - assuming you've correctly identified the units.

The LT230 transfer uses HP oil.

The BW box uses ATF. Ashcroft's recommend:

"What oil should I use in my Borg Warner transfer box?

We recommend you use ATF Dexron 2/3 in your Borg Warner transfer box?"

The RAVE CD disc doesn't cover the 'normally equipped' 1987 Model Year. That's in a big thick book which covers MY 1986 to 1989.
"Workshop manual 1986 to 1989 Ref: SRR660ENWM
Range Rover Workshop Manual all Petrol and diesel models from 1986 to1989"

Forget the Haynes manual.
