Hi All, I purchased an 09 RR TDV8, when I arrived home I noticed black oil in the water header tank. Probably only a small cap full. I removed the header tank and cleaned it. There is no contamination in the engine oil and the coolant is still pink so obviously the oil and water are not mixing. However having been on several sites people are saying it could be the head gaskets. Can anyone help please

Doesn’t necessarily mean head gasket.
Does it overheat at all?

Mayonnaise in cap is another example - everyone panics HG failure,, may be due to short runs and nothing wrong with HG.
Doesn’t overheat and no mayonnaise in the cap or on the oil dipstick. Also I would point out that the engine sounds really nice with no knocks. The only thing I would say is that it misfired a couple of times when I drove it home which was about 30 miles

The mileage is 138,234 and the car has full history up to 121,000. I have not had the car very long so don’t really know much more. Would say that when I removed the water tank the coolant was pink and had not mixed with the oil. As I said it was only a very small amount, probably an oil cap full at the most.

Hi

wonder if it’s oil from a faulty oil cooler , where it gets into the coolant and ends up in the expansion tank

A common scam by certain car buyers is to put a little used engine oil in the header tank whilst the seller is not looking/distracted, then say gasket gone want loads of money off the price?
Beware when more than one person comes to buy your car!

Thank you, it’s a possibility I suppose. Really not sure what to do now

Combustion pressure is significantly higher than the cooling system pressure, hence why you see oil in coolant and not coolant in oil..

Headgaskets failing on the 3.6 aren't unheard of the engine is a pile O shíte IMO.

HOWEVER...

A failed oil cooler will also dump oil into the coolant, thanks to the knobend at ford...

3.6 isn't a good motor, you have to fiddlefúck around with them even for simple things...

Do a sniff test too just to be sure..

Do you mean oil pressure is higher than coolant pressure? There can be leaks in either direction oil into coolant or coolant into oil.
