Hi all,
Have an issue with my 2005 RR sport sc, when I turn the key to start it dose its checks but doesn't always turn over first time I have to turn key back then retry sometimes two or three times, It has always started and when it turns over it is at a good rate. Will check battery connection tomorrow but I don't think it is that as when it dose it the lights on the dash don't show signs of dimming ,
Wondered if anybody had come across this before.
Thanks
Paul

Good Battery connections and earths always a good start as you say.
Could also be the starter relay or starter motor showing signs they are on their way out. HTH

It's posible I think it's a case of elimination, I will check the simple things first and then I will have to find information on how to test the different components .

Update was out for most of the day but when I got back had a look at the RR. Checked battery connections found the positive was not as tight as it should be. Then I changed the starter relay over with another one which was the same. Neither of these things sorted the problem. I suppose the next thing is the starter motor or the ignition switch as gold Rover suggested, problem is it doesn't do it every time.

If you can get a wiring diagram and find out what fuses supply and are supplied by the ignition then that may help you narrow it down by checking the voltage when it happens. Am I right in thinking it is a close cousin to the disco ?

I think it is Norfolk cousin close ;) @gstuart is the guy for that one

NOT the Norfolk cousin close, for the Sport / Disco connection :)

Hi

If I’m reading it right the engine doesn’t always crank over when the key is turned

Easiest thing I found was, use a multimeter , VDC , one test lead on the postive battery post , then other test lead onto the engine bracket that sits on top of the engine , ensuring there’s a good voltage reading

Standing battery voltage needs to be around 12.6 Vdc and running will be around 14.6 Vdc , alternator will charge up to 15.6 VDC

If op hasn’t got a multimeter , remove drivers side headlight and air filter box, the body and starter motor earths are tucked down the front , as per picture , these can come loose and cause issue with the starter motor not always operating

Suppose can at least start there , if not multimeter will indeed help considerably testing the circuits out

Hi mate

Indeed sport up to around 2009 , and D3 have the same engine, gearbox , suspension, etc, inc most of the electronics

Sport chassis is shorter than the D3

hi, very occasionally mine will just make a bump noise when i turn the key and then off and on it starts so very difficult to trace.

Ur not wrong there ref tracing faults, took me nearly 3 x months to find an airbag fault , found it eventually in the main loom tucked down by the passenger seat , that was also after I had to replace , 2 x curtain airbags, seat airbag and one pre tensioner , alas that’s why it was sold as a project D3 , only blessing was I bought it for peanuts because they couldn’t get a mot on it because of the airbag light , total outlay was £100

Removing all sorts of panels and headlining was all good fun , kept thinking , how many more panels can they fit in a car, lol

Also managed to at last find a battery drain after going through nearly 100 x fuses

Think having a multimeter and diagnostics is a must now considering there complexity

Still wouldn’t have any other vehicle though

Thank you all for your knowledgable replies , you have saved me a lot of time, I do have a multimeter and will perform the suggested test and take a look at the two earths at the weekend and keep you informed.
Thanks again,
Paul

Hi Paul, glad the info helped, the ladies and gents members here are very knowledgeable and helpful

Great u have a multimeter as that will at least prove 100% what circuits are ok

Indeed, plse let us know how it goes, also saves u trying to just change parts for the sake of it

Where’s about in the uk are u plse

Hi , I am from Southend on sea Essex , not to far from you.

Hi Paul

Thks , see how u get on, as ur local always happy to help where I can, have a driveway so can easily put ur landy there so don’t have to worry about working in the road

Have always helped other fellow landy owners FOC as it’s nice making new friends along the way

Ie , two people does make life easier where one can turn ign key whilst other person tests etc

Just know what it’s like pulling ur hair out and I’ve had help so always nice being able to pass it on

That's really good of you, like wise if I can assist you along the way at any time always happy to.

Ur very welcome and many thks , plse feel free to give me a shout

Jobs I’ve got left are changing the oils in the gearbox, diffs , transfer case , then replace the AC condensor

Alas urs being a sport they are the virtually the same mechanically to my D3

Only had mine 2 x years and suprising what knowledge u pick up over time , also saving a fortune by keeping away from the garages , lol

Plse update us how things go , thks
