tommo138, did this solve your problem?? I have exactly the same fault with my dse. I am leaning towards the in tank diesel pump as it definitely seems like a fuel starvation problem. I was trying to get up a steep hill from standstill the other day and my rangie wouldnt go over 12mph as it just had no power/torque whatsoever.

well it was behaving itself until 2 days ago when it started again, mine doesnt sound as bad as yourself but what has happened to mine is: going along the bypasses near me at 70 mph there is two hills that arent that steep but go for about 1-2 miles when you start to travel up them the speed will start to drop and by the time your level again ive lost about 10-15 mph. The main thing is you can put your foot to the floor and nothing will happen, no speed gain or rev's. When i have tried using the kick down it will cut in fine but the speed will still not increase and as the rev's hit 3500 - 4000 the engine starts to feel like its really struggling and holding back. There's no smoke chucking out the back when any of this is happening.

sorry to make it long winded but im starting to get worried! have checked all intercooler/turbo hoses, air filter, map sensor and all looks pretty good. im starting to think along your lines now that its gonna be something with the fuel supply. if you manage to diagnosis the problem please let me know, as im starting to think its gonna have to go round to the indies and god only knows how long/much it'll take to find the fault. im pretty good at changing parts but not that clued up at trying to find the problem!!!
 
My DSE is a bit sluggish up hills, I've had trouble with the vacumm pipe from the manifold to the MAP sensor, but it looks ok at the minute, so I might test the MAP sensor or just buy a replacement for £40. A faulty map sensor limits fuel delivery by the ECU.

The vacuum pipe from the manifold to the MAP sensor is a pressure pipe. It measures the manifold pressure, more pressure more fuel. If the MAP sensor is not working you will lose power when engine is under load. Going up hill for instance.
 
is the pipe of any certain type? had a feel of mine today where it connects to the manifold and feels like the end is fraid, might be losing pressure? anyone know the part number for the map sensor? might be worth getting a new one and seeing if that cures it.
 
Where it the temp guage needle when this happen??? The reason i ask is that mine used to do the same thing when it got hot, found to be when the viscous fan locked up it drew power from the engine to push more air through the failing raditaor. didn't actually have the red light on but the further it got towards the red the more power was lost. replaced the radiator and never got it again.

only happens when at normal running temp, needle about half way, havent had the needle go past this ever.
 
tommo138, without putting to finer a point to it, re-read this thread from the beginning and you'll get your answer. Its your map sensor,like i said from the start black smoke and no power means over fuelling,so its your air side that needed to be checked first.
 
Yeah thats part you need, just be careful when refitting vacuum pipe to it cos if you force it too much you could snap off the plastic intake, Best of luck and dont forget to report back when you've install it.

But it's not a vacuum pipe it's a pressure pipe "Why yo no rissen glashopper".:):):):)

No problem mate. Blowing and sucking maybe the same in some contexts but not in this one.:cool::cool::cool:
 
got the sensor in the post this morning so have fitted it and...........................it all seems good!!! throttle response seems to be alot better and is not struggling up hills(even overtook someone going up hill!!) thanks to everyone who helped me out with this, was really getting to me! oh the only tthing i did notice is the pipe which goes to the underside of the manifold feels a fraid where it connects to the manifold so will replace this aswell when i find some replacement hose. once again a BIG BIG thanks everryone.

Is everything still working as it should be? Mines got even worse so will buy a new map sensor next week if i ever manage to get home

still all fine(touch wood!!!) i changed the map sensor and the pipe from the sensor to the underside of the manifold-cost all about £45.

Excellent, great news. Hope mine turns out to be a a simple fix. Although think it might be a bit more serious now as i am showing an engine management light and wont start at all now :mad:
