Was working on the classic earlyer when i noticed a small pool of oil on the ground just near the rear diff, expecting the diff seal to have gone i got underneath and found it was coming from a large central shock absorber type thing,Anyone tell me what is this for as i don't remember seeing them on discoverys before?

I think that you will find that this unit is a self leveling unit. I have a classic LSE that I changed from air suspesion to springs and that now looks lower at the rear end because I think there is no self leveler as it had air suspesion

Hope this helps Craig

Thanks Craig, mine is a vogue tdi and looks to have standard shock/spring suspension on it now.Its possible though it once was self leveling and has sisce been converted.I will investigate more tommorow.

hi it is a self leveling unit mate fitted directly above the rear diff , these to the best of my knowledge were not fitted to the discovery , once failed its common for people to remove them due to the high cost of replacement , if you carry heavy loads and you decide to remove it you could allways consider fitting uprated shockers though :)
rick.

Thanks both, I thought off air suspension for some reason when craig called it a self leveler but I've been looking at a mates manual today and now understand what you both mean.I wonder how much a replacement will cost? I don't carry hardle anything in the back so might try doing away with it totally as you suggest.

Hi
I think you will get away with it but my LSE looks as if it has a load in the boot even when empty. Was thinking of 1" lift springs on rear to compensate but car might not be worth repairing as its been attacked by the dreaded rust worm worse than I thought.

I'll just leave it in place at the moment while i finish off a few other small jobs, luckily not much rot though, shame about yours craig is it really that bad?

Well so the garage say. I knew that the passenger side floor needed welding but they have found that the rear body to chassis mounts have got severe rusting. I might tackle this myself but will have to be a long term project.
Craig
