They are a very good and powerful engine, however, they produce the majority of their power and torque at high engine RPM. This may be great for road driving, and OK for offroad use, as they have an excellent throttle response, and they have a high power to weight ration, but for towing it is not ideal. You will find yourself having to slip the clutch much more than in a Diesel or V8, and hills can be a problem as you will probably find yourself using a lower gear than with a V8 ot Tdi, which will kill fuel consumption, which will be pretty horrendous anyway, probably worse that a 3.5 V8, as it will have to be driven harder to make the same progress.
