Hi, My wife's TD5 Facelift model runs a bit rough on tickover and feels like it is only running on 4 cylinders - sometimes! At other times it runs fine. My first thought was the oil in the wiring problem but that was done about a year ago by the previous owner. ( I have only read about this in another thread but don't really know where the wiring loom and the ECU are to check them). Could this be caused by water in the fuel? I only ask as someone has removed the original fuel filter and the head where the filter mounts and replaced it with two separate fuel filters, presumably one for the feed and one for the return. This would no doubt result in a build up of water in the filters unlike the original which has the sedimenter at the bottom of the filter body. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find the injector wiring loom and the ECU please and do you agree that water in the fuel would give the symptoms I am getting? Any other advice will be appreciated.
Regards, Paul:confused:

Thanks XAT44. I'll have a look once the rain shower we have at the moment :)has passed.

Just checked, no oil in ECU socket, no sign of oil in plug. Started it up and the idle was rough, like it was missing on one cylinder. Took it for a thrash and it is now running normally although it was a bit sluggish for about 3/4 of a mile then surged for a bit then was back to normal. Anyone got any ideas? I haven't changed the fuel filter(s) yet but they should arrive tomorrow from Eurocarparts.

Do a search ffs
Injector orings and washers

It it was injector seals you might notice your oil level rising on the dipstick, or a smell of diesel on the dipstick.
Worth a look here

Guys, the request for clarification was rather tongue in cheek!:hysterically_laughi

when i got my Disco 2 Td5 18 months ago it also ran rough and lumpy from cold.
I filled up with BP Ultimate and this definately made a big difference.
I never use supermarket fuel and also add 2so each time i fill up.
Worth a try and not expensive.

Problem now found and resolved. It was water in the fuel filter. I have temporarily replaced the two non-standard filters and am looking to source a standard filter head and sedimenter so I can use the standard filter in future. Thanks for all of your input and advice. Paul

Interesting to read this thread after a chat with my mate yesterday.

He is elbow deep in a Tdi200 from his Defender. Not related to this tale.

Anyway his mate works for a large truck maker (im going to keep all this anon, as I dont usually repeat "friend of a friend" stories.

So the truck supplier was having on going warranty issues with their customer, very large supermarket chain, injectors and pumps failing, they monitored this for two years, so proper info collected, they even analysed the fuel when the trucks came back for work.

The trucks always used the supermarkets own "brand" forecourt fuel.

Conclusion, the fuel had "lots" of water in it and it was stuffing the engines!

Supplier told the supermarket they were withdrawing the warranties.

The result? The supermarket placed an order for a new fleet of trucks from the same supplier and admitted their fuel was the problem!!

Def no more supermarket fuel for me!!

I agree. We have changed our fuel buying habits from using the Supermarket with the green logo to the local Shell garage and the price is generally within 2p per litre of the supermarkets.:bounce: shock horror!!
