I've now removed both heads.

The misfire fault sticks out like a sore thumb - Blown gasket between 2 and 4 cylinder.

What is a bit concerning though is that the right hand rocker cover internals were covered in oil/water emulsion. The head gaskets look fine between the oil and water galleries.

The liners are all level and show no sign of movement so how is the coolant leaking into the oil?

Erm... Cracked block? Been there, done that, but mine is 4.6 which is probably more susceptible to cracking.

The main pool of engine oil has no sign of water in it though. Pull the dipstick and the oil is perfect. Surely a cracked block would lead to water in the sump oil?

Cracked head??

I never saw evidence of coolant in the oil when I had a cracked block, but anyway I read the thread again and I don't think your symptoms are related to that. May be worth checking the head like you say, pentrant dye would be quick if you can get some while the heads are off.

What about your valves they leak too should of put oil in the compression test could be rings head or valves before you take head off it's best to check all aspects first.
