Rough idle after MAF clean

Did you buy a ****part MAF or a Genuine (4to 6 times more expensive)?
Turbo,

I must confess to a ****part at 1/3 the cost of of the genuine.

D'you think that could be the problem? I was told that they'd not had any problems beofore - but then that would be the line wouldn't it. Best to return it and pay the extra?

Many people tried a known working MAF (often an old genuine ) to test their, then they bought a ****part like you and results aren't that good.

I read many times that a old genuine MAF well cleaned is better than that cheap piece of crap.

Ask Rich998a (member from Rangerovers.net)http://www.westsomersetlandrovers.com and allyv8 (member of Rangerovers.net) why those cheap MAF aren't good.

Just bumped this back up as I was wondering if James ever got the problem sorted. Did resetting the adaptive values cure it?

My mechanic mate has been looking at my '99 P38 as when cold it runs like a bag of spanners - coughing splutting with revs dropping, stalling, etc for about 5 - 10 mins until warmed up. When warm, it's fine.

I did post the other day and Wammers suggested checking/cleaning the idle air control valve which we did. No change. We got a MAF sensor fault on diagnostic, borrowed another MAF and it worked lovely. However, I've just bought a new MAF and it hasn't solved it. It's still ****e!

There is the remote possibility that the replacement part is fault but unlikely. Could the problem be wiring to the MAF or does anyone have any other suggestions?

Would you believe the local LR dealer still has it, 2 weeks Monday. I have not put pressure on them as they want to fix it FOC. It was booked in before the warranty expired, and it has now expired.

We have the missus BMW to get about in. Lord help us if it snows again. If it does snow I will ask to borrow a courtesy LR. I think they are just working on it in between billable work, understandable.

They have no errors as such to go on apparently, swapped out a few sensors (O2 and lambda, crank postion etc) and still no joy. The battery is a gonner now so they replaced it with a new one too. Fingers crossed for news next week.

I bit the bullet - bought a genuine MAF and guess what? Still no bloody different!!!

Problem is my mechanic can only look at it for about 5 mins with the engine running and then the engine warms up and the problem goes away. We then have to wait a few hours for the engine to be cold again. Not a job that can be rushed!

Got an auto electrician coming out later today / tomorrow to see if it's a wiring fault as the MAF is still the only thing coming up on diagnostic.

I got a call today, looks like the connection between the MAF and the ECU could be at fault.

Maybe your one is a similar issue.....

So maybe fixed, but the proof is tomorrow morning when they start her up. Going to call me with an update in the morning.

Update you tomorrow....

Ha, seems ok to pick up, will do in the morning. All down to a loose wire or summin! Can you believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????!!!!!!!!! Weeks of madness.

Hi James,

Glad to hear yours should be sorted.

Mine has been checked all over on the wiring and everything seems fine. My mechanic is about to take an axe to it! We've even tried a replacement fuel pump as he thought there may be a fault there. Still no difference.

I'll speak to him tomorrow and get him to recheck the wiring between the MAF and ECU but he's getting a touch ****y with my suggestions as he's tried eveything he knows over and over again!!!

Well I have her back, and all does seem to be ok. Rev counter suggests a low rev still, but then audibly it sounds fine. Maybe the instrument...... Anyway, not worried, she runs!

After all that I still can not believe it was basically a broken wire, nowhere near where I had touched either. The temp sensor on the rocker cover, suggested the temp was high when it was cold, then they traced the loom over past the alternator and the cables were damaged there, inside the trunking.

Bizarre.

Thanks to all for the help and pointers, but note this one for future.

Excellent news that you have it back and (hopefully) sorted! Sounds like they threw a whole load of new parts at it too- which is nice :)

I must say, the wiring on these supposedly rugged 4x4's is pathetically thin and suceptable to damage..
