Hi,

I've just bought a 2003 disco 2 and need some sort of roof rack for it.

Amongst other things, I'm looking to put my kayaks on the roof (if i can reach)....

Any suggestions on best roof rack? most practical? best looking?.....

and of course where to buy it from

Many thanks,

Hi
Welcome to the forum, fellow Dorset bloke.
May I suggest you go on the Introduce Yourself part of the forum.
and we like pics!:):):)

Don't know if you are familiar with the marque, but if you aren't have a very good read of all the fun that you have in store keeping the beast on the road.
Welcome to the asylum!:):):)

Thanks - i'll go have a read....

From reading lots of MOT histories - I've been looking for a disco for a month or so - Its fairly clear than LR made the chassis using paper or old soup cans or something equally sh1te - other than that I'm a complete newbie so any joy of ownership stories gratefully received :)

The chassis on Disco 2s aren't actually as bad as Disco 1s for rust. Main areas to check are aft of the rear axle, and the rear wheel arches.
I don't think the problem is so much steel quality as that Landrovers never had much in the way of protective coatings on the chassis.
Myself, if I was getting another Disco2, I would get another V8, not a Td5, but whatever floats your boat.

Not sure I'd agree with that! My disco 1s had the usual rust problems but they were in the sills and others have them in the boot floor and some in the rear crossmember, but D2s are absolutely famous for the type of chassis rust you describe, either side of the fuel tank where the chassis curves downwards. Starts in the seams there. I include mine in that.
Maybe I was just lucky.
We'll see if others comment. ;)

OP, if you can find a second hand Brownchurch rack, they are very good quality and will outlast the vehicle. The D1 racks fit, they are just a little shorter as the D2 has a longer roof. They fit to the rain gutters so hold quite a lot of weight.
Look for a galvanised one.
Failing that, a thule/halfords rack using the roof bars will do the job. Ive had both, they are both good quality.

I couldn't find a roof rack I liked, so designed my own and got it made (not the one in my profile picture). Cost me £300 total - though the actual mounting brackets came on the old rack with the car.

Never heard of brown church so will take a look.

The roof bars don't go that far back, so if I put rails on them wouldn't the rear overhang stress the roof?

Might be an idea, I'll see what's about but agree I haven't seen anything I like yet...
