Roof rack on or off?

Just out of interest, who here takes off their roof rack on their Defender (propper roof rack not bars :D ) when they are not using it? I have one of the old ones where the ladder attatches to the top of the roof rack so it takes ages to take the rack off due to having to fiddle with the mounting bolts for the ladder on the rear crossmember. I have been thinking that maybe I should get a standalone ladder for the back so I can take the rack of quickly when I am not using it to save fuel and get less wind noise :p - So, who does take theirs off?

I have a standalone ladder, and I never take either off.

The roof rack is handy for all kinds of things so its a case of, having it and making use of it. Purchased a double materess a few weeks back 90 miles on the roof rack....

If I took it off I am sure i would maybe use the trailer more etc but why bother.
 
Well I use it for bikes and kayaks on the most part, which I dont use all the time, especially this time of year. I haven't had use for it in a while due to the season. I have seen a standalone ladder for £35 so I am strongly considering it.
 
Mine never comes off, not only is it handy, it looks awesome and me lights are bolted to it :D
 
take the rack off and sell it to me...

if its so much trouble for you ill even take it off and fit your stand alone ladder ;)

£40 sound resonable?
 
Mine stays on, looks good and my roof lights are on it. Too handy to take off as well as it is a hassle to put it on for a quick B&Q pick up, most of the times it has been used have been last minute.
 
To save on diesel, I took the roof rack off the disco for a 1000 mile route.
I monitor the mpg using fuelly and it made no difference at all. After that it stayed on until I sold it.
 
I took the roof rack off the 110 in my avitar for a 500 mile round trip to scotland, still only got 9 mpg with a trailer on:eek:

I guess it would make a huge difference to a prius, but I don't think a few metal tubes makes much difference to the aerodynamics (or lack of) to a Landy.

Tup agreed, leave it on. it dont matter on a fender.

I has a G4 roof rack that i dont use but i dont have anywhere else to store it. lol so it stays on. Did brum to Sennen last week 285 miles each way. did the same trip last summer without the rack and it still takes a tank of fuel each way.
 
My splendid ('Church' summat....? ) galvanised gem has only been unbolted to swap it to each of the 3 Defenders I've had..... It has the seperate ladder.

With the aerodynamic qualities of a housebrick I've always assumed (rightly it seems) that it makes f-all difference to the fuel consumption, and it always comes in handy at odd unexpected moments so it stays there. A
