Hi

I'm new here as I've just got an 89 Defender 90 2.5td. When I got it home I noticed a bit of oil on the drive so I had a look. At first I thought it was the rocker cover gasket but it looks like the oil is coming from the round thing with the hose on attached to the the top of the rocker cover.

My questions are: What is the purpose of this device and what's it called. What's the best way to seal it. I was thinking of packing it out with tape to make it a better fit.

Is a top speed of 70mph and 23/24 mpg good for an 18 year old truck?

Many thanks in advance, Stu

Do ye mean the cyclone breather thingy?

That's the crankcase breather and it's to allow excess pressure form the engine to escape They all leak. don't waste your time trying to stop em. If it doesn't leak it's not a landrover.

The big cap is your oil filler cap! My 1986 2.5 N/A (basically your engine without the turbo) can reach 78 at a real push (think that was down hill a bit on the motorway) and I get about 27-28 mpg, so you're doing alright.

Hi Pos

I'm happy with the speed of it. I've had 74.6 down hill indicated on the satnav :) I was expecting to get 28-30 mpg out of it though :(

Good point Red! You will be able to get more mpg out of it once you've been driving it for a little while longer. You'll learn to lift your foot 2-3 cm off the accelerator whilst maintaining the same speed. Its basically more fuel, no more speed with these engines once they hit a certain speed. I'd reckon you could get it up to about 25-26 mpg no problem with a bit of foot lifting! Veg oil does give you more mpg and a bit more power but its harder to start with on cold mornings. Try 6 litres with 30 litres of diesel, it'll make a difference.

you'd best check yer oil levels on a reg basis as if your getting oil pushed outta there it's a sign that your rings are very worn/split and your getting crankcase presurisation - it'll be ok to drive but it will use lots of oil

i've had this on a 19J 110 in the past and at times it felt like it was using as much oil as it did fuel - if I drove at high ish speeds for for 10+ miles the cap used to get blown off the crankcase and then cover the engine bay is hot oil - it also causes lots of oilly air to get into the fuel system which will manage your air filter pretty quickly

you might want to block off the end of the pipe that connects to the cap and take another open ended pipe from the down to below the engine to divert the lost oil - this is a very good way of automatically protecting your chassis as the oil does tend to coat the underneath of your vehicle quite well

and get a garage to do a compression test

I've been trying to read up on the veg oil situation but it's a bit tricky to understand. Can I just go to the supermarket and buy some veg oil off the shelf and pour it into the tank with absolutely nothing else to do? What type of oil can I use ie. Sunflower oil, olive oil, fry crisp and dry!

Pos, you are saying use a 5 -1 ratio. So I go to Asda or Morrisons, take 6ltrs of cooking oil off the shelf then fill up with 30ltrs of diesel. if it's that simple then I'm a happy bunny - no conversion or heater thingy.

In summer can i run at 50/50 ratio. Will the TD5 run 100% veg oil?

Sorry for appearing a bit dense on this subject but it's all new to me.

TD5 isnt keen on veggy oil, so i read

is this some sorta attempt at seeing how many times a thread can be hijacked ?
