Eve all,

I had a bit of a boo boo whilst out laning on Sunday. i basically crashed into a wall and upset many many locals of a posh village :D

luckily, as i run stupid tyres, whilst turning the tyre stuck out and caught the brunt of the force (causing it to explode) not damaging any bodywork at all! result!

i have however knocked the *uck out of my steering components and need your advice.

firstly there are now toe in issues... i mean problems. they are out by 1 and a 1/4"

i managed to get home after swapping the wheels but the steering wheel is orientated 90 degrees out.

i did pop my head under it tonight for a look at what im going to have to do. firstly ive got to change the manual steering box cos its dumped ep90 all over my drive and the track rod ends are not smooth all the way through. they are stiff/notchy around the midpoint.

i havent jacked it and things yet, but wanted to know where to go from next. do i just change the box and sort the toe in/out? or is there likely to be further damage? what do i look for? the track rod and drag link look straight and the steering damper is fine. the bit that swivels on the drop arm is ok and not stiff/notchy so i dont think ive got problems there.

erm about it really. basically i went from 15-20mph to 0 in an instant with a loud bang. the front passenger side took all the force.

garage? or can i do it :D (yes you can!) sorry, braking out into song.

im always offroad... the incident happened whilst fording... i lost control. dont want to say to much cos the locals are reporting me to the police... prob get an ASBO.

wheres my *ucking advice?

Check the steering arms themselves ... often first bits to bend.

Measure the same dimension both sides, and they should be the same.

If there is terrible toe-in it is pretty certain that either the track rod is buckled (HOORAY! easy to replace) or a steering arm is bent, which is a bummer.

You must have given it a thump. How's the wall?

Did you exchange details with the owner of the wall?
Apart from that what could they report you for?
If you had to swerve to avoid that loose dog hardly your fault?

what are the steering arms? radius arms? or drag link/track rod? should i look at the linkages to the wheel and the UJ's?

there must have been something at the base of the wall which caught my wheel. the wall has a footpath ontop which acts as a retaining wall for the stream which forms the ford. there is nothing wrong with it and yes it was a bang. i felt like a right cock.

havent heard from the 5-0 yet, but its only been 2 days. my folks will get the call as my 90 is registered at home :)

haha!

Unless you've caused injury to a third party or damaged property belonging to a third party there is no legal requirement to inform the police. So unless you have visibly damaged the wall then the police won't get involved.

i dunno :( like i said, all the force went through the front passenger wheel. it might have gone through the axle... na, i dont think so. not unless the axle can transfer the energy easily. i would have thought it was all taken up in the wheel and steering components. it shot my steering box.

saying that. the passenger door opens easier and the drivers door has become hard to close! i think the shock loosened the hinges :( they havent been on long so maybe i didnt tighten them enough. or i twisted a chassis ;)

i didnt actually explain... actually. ive got landyzone.co.uk all down my 90 so the locals prob picked up on it :(

anyway **** em, if their reading.

i dropped into the ford, went along turned a little to the left to exit up the cobbles slipway... nothing. panic... brake a little. traction comes back. i swerve left and connect with something low down. no bodywork contact though just my tyre exploding :)

locals said i was doing 30mph+ :D i was in 2nd in my n/a! i estimate around 10-15 when not giving it the beans in 2nd.
