hello folks

I have an FL1 td4 2006.

It recently popped an injector out because it suffered a broken collar, why are the bloody little mounting bolts so soding expensive?????

sooooo.

I have reseated the injector and put the bloody thing back together again, broke the rocker cover getting it out so have changed that, having got it all back together I now find the car is laying down smoke like an apc
this is black exhaust smoke so I assume a bad air fuel mix, there are no splits I can see in the intercooler hoses, I have ordered some new anyway just in case.

my Chinese code reader says p1020 a low signal on mass air device so a new maf is coming.

Is there anything stupid that I may have missed or done?

Help !!

Gordon

Have you put the plug on the correct way round? Apparently it's possible to fit it the wrong way round by mistake. I've not managed it myself, but it has been done before.

I have yes ! had a bit of a panic at work that I handt reconnected the MAP sensor but checked that and I have, there is air coming out of the intercooler and it increases with revs so I am just stumped.

Sounds line the intercooler has split. That would cause black smoke.

as I said I have new ones on the way, I took the opportunity to feel the air flow out of the intercooler and to see if it rose with revs when I took the old ones off, but yes they will be back on soon, the long one was a bit squidgy

I'm quite shocked that I suffered the exact same fault a few months ago, and am also laying a smokescreen. I can't bring anything much to the fault finding yet as I've not started looking in earnest tbh.

But mine does have silicone hoses and BMW pcv fitted and I still smoke (mine is moderate throttle, a steady light cloud which gets heavy as my foot goes down - the last bit I'd expect). Still drives pretty nicely.

I was wondering if it was the maf or maybe, seeing as an injector popped out, if it was a duff injector?

I'm interested to see if your new maf sorts it.

I have the new bmw pcv, so the last bits to try are the new hoses and MAF. whats the likely hood of a split hose from the turbo underneath?

I'm less inclined to think it's hoses, if like mine yours started smoking spontaneously once it was all back together. Unless it's the usual one one the exit from the IC, but seems a bit coincidental.
For the same reason I'm not sure about the maf.

Black smoke is over fueling. This can occur for a couple of reasons. If there is no MAF signal (MAF unplugged) then the DCU runs a basic fuel map. This fuel map doesn't have any smoke limiting strategy. So it makes lots of smoke and plenty of power.
If the MAF signal is weak but still just in tolerance. The DCU runs smoke limitation based on the MAF signal received. Because the signal is weak, power will be reduced, but so will the smoke.
If the MAF signal drops so low that it's out of spec. The DCU bases fueling on throttle position and MAP signal. This doesn't implement smoke limitation strategy, so smoke is produced.
A code that registers a MAF signal fault, is a good pointer to the latter fault.
So a MAF is the place to start.
I would say, don't buy a cheap Chinese clone MAF. I've had some success with a clone off Ebay. But although it's better than a bad MAF. It's not as good as a new genuine Bosch MAF. I use a Synergy which is currently boosting the MAF signal. This works well to compensate for the lower clone MAF signal.

no the injector seems fine but it will be the next port of call if the hoses and maf trick fail

I have a synergy at the mo as well
