Hi
I have a 1983 series 3 which wont go in reverse gear you can push the stick in and let the cluch up gentely it starts to wont to move but it throws the stick out if you hold the stick it just grinds but wont move.

layshaft or idler or both have lost a tooth or two

Is there a separate reverse gear on the layshaft or does reverse just use first gear on the main and layshaft with the idler gear?
(I.e is it most likely to be missing tooth on the idler)

On top of your gearbox under the stick there is a sprung plate to stop you going into reverse accidentally.
Beneath that you should find an adjustment screw which says how far over your stick can go. Have you tried adjusting that to see if it makes a difference?
It could simply be down to a bit of wear on your selector forks.
