Reverse Gear Trouble

Today I towed for the first time in my 2002 L322 TD6 Auto. As I reversed, I had to bump the trailer up the kirb, as I did this, the reverse gear slipped and juddered. It has never done this before. I detached the trailer and tried reverse again. On tick over it moved fine. As I accelerated, it slipped and juddered again. Water is now dripping from the gearbox area. Forward gears are fine. Help!!! Any ideas?

This more one for the likes of @Bemble , @Saint.V8 or even the reprobate who is @holidaychicken , BUT just to be sure, have you checked to make sure it's water? I know it's a silly question but never hurts to check, especially as, at the time you posted, it was dark out, so it may have happened in the dark.
Also have you ever changed the gearbox oil or had it recon'd
 
Thanks for taking the time to reply, the gearbox was reconditioned 20k miles ago in Jan 2015. I have had the motor about three months. The water was dripping from a rubber drain pipe? About a cup full in total. Stopped now.
Tried it again this evening from cold. Forward gears are fine, reverse still slips anything over tick over. :-(
Am grateful of any help.
 
Definitely above my pay grade. Now that the others have been tagged into the convo, they will look in at some point ,the next time they sign in. Has this now happened both after a run/warm and when cold? Not sure if it's relevant but trying to get as much info as possible for the guys to read when they arrive.
 
Water is from the aircon drains, they run either side of the gearbox.

As for the reverse gear problem, if it goes OK in the forward gears then the clutch or drive pack responsible for reverse has gone south, it has been known for one of the shafts to unwind and shear from the clutch drum but cant remember if it was the one for reverse or not.

@Bemble has a photo od the unwound shaft from memory...

The water is probably from your air conditioning if you have had that switched on? Mine dumps out a load when I stop.
As far as the lack of drive I can only think that one of the clutch packs could have been damaged but above my pay grade too, if you search Bemble or RRPhil's work you may find an answer but I may be wrong as I think some of the forward gears share the same clutch pack as the reverse.
It's been a while since I had my transmission apart and even then I didn't really understand what all the bits did.

I think it will be above my pay grade to enter into the gearbox workings.....

If you are getting the transmission looked at make sure the valve body is also tested and fitted with modified piston part if required

What sort of price can I expect for a removal of box and refurb these limited parts? Box has only done 20k since recon?
 
Can you get it back to the people that did the recon or are they not in your area, at least that way you have an idea of how good their work is?

It is a bit of a lottery as to who is willing to work on the transmissions as some garages prfer just to swap out the complete transmission and torque converter which is ok providing their work is good and the all important valve body has been tested and if necessary overhauled as when these start to fail they reduce the pressure applied to the torque converter clutch causing it to fail prematurely which in turn trashes the complete transmission again.
I have seen transmissions swapped out for anywhere between £1200 to £3000 and if you have somebody who is good with that transmission and has the equipment then removal is not too difficult, stripping down the box would be ok for them so depending on the parts required you may get an indy to do it for £500 maybe but that is a guess I'm afraid. It is such a gamble with transmission companies..
 
Thanks again for this, I contacted the recon firm, they are only 20 mile away, he seemed genuinely surprised that the box has only lasted 20k. He has agreed to do it for a reduced price as he states that it probably would not need a full recon. Just replacing failed parts? The original price was £2000.
I looked at that link you sent me - very informative, thanks. They look a complex gearbox! I can now see how leaks in pressure causes most issues. Still wouldnt be confident in doing one myself though!

His company number listed in the ebay details show the company was dissolved in 2014.....might want to check this with them and ask why they still list their company number on their adverts!

And, Yes, a recon'ed or better still a Sonnax Valve block is a must.

I think I would be talking to the garage that did the refurb, as they said you may not need the complete transmission and if they do the work you can always go back to them and pay with your credit card for added protection
You can always specify you want the valve body looked at as well which they may have done already, companies specialise in testing them and fitting the Sonnax kit.
Normally if a valve body has failed 10K miles is a typical mileage before the TC fails again.i am only recalling other people's knowledge .
If you buy something off eBay whoever fits it won't guarantee it and the guy off eBay will blame the garage or even if they agree to replace it if it went tits you will still have to pay the garage to remove it which you won't get back off eBay :)
 
Thanks for that advice, I will call in to the original garage this week and speak to the engineer as he seemed a decent bloke and willing to help when I spoke to him on the phone. Will certainly enquire about the valve block recon and the possibility of Sonnax. Will let you know how I get on - Thanks :)
And the credit card - Deffo will do that!
 
Keep us posted, you never know they might say it is something even more simple, maybe just a valve block issue.
I had a Google and found the sight below, if you are lucky it could just be valve block and maybe it could be fixed without even removing the transmission
Have a read, you are basically driving a BMW as you know.
You should try plugging into a decent diagnostic as well to see if you can read any codes , something like an Allcomms

Just read that, interesting! Again all issues seem to stem from the valve body. I hope your right and it is a simple fix :) will definitely keep you posted. I have plugged it into my iCarsoft i930 with the L322 software on, no codes showing, unless the iCarsoft is not thorough enough?
