Should only be 3 wires on it, big brown is alternator to battery, smaller brown wire with yellow trace is ignition live "excitor", white wire is the tacho (rev counter) signal.
Much obliged, I'll try to work out which one of the two should be there and transfer that over (assuming when the new alternator arrives it doesn't have one on it)

You're telling porky pies, I've just looked up a star chart and there isn't a Disco1BFG in any constellation...

Not entirely sure how to respond ..

So,

1) Gosh. So, er, Disco1BFG is my real name then ? Care to guess my kids names ? o_O

2) Naming of the star predates my screen name by more than a little

3)I wouldn't have a scooby about that - and if there is, it would be nothing to do with me o_O

4) Thank you Sherlock .

Choose the one that suits :D

I was jesting... :roll

Slight query re the wiring:
I have two small "boxes" connected to the wiring for the alternator.
One on the bottom of the alternator, shown by the light grey wire

The other floating around the engine bay

Am I correct in thinking there should only be 1 of the two connected?
For the photo's I would say they are interference suppressors for the radio.

So the new alternator is fitted, and giving 14.4 volts at the battery when running, and no charge light, so all seems well!

I've left the little floater floating, it was working with it hanging there before and it's working with it like it now!

Thanks very much everyone for your help, it's very much appreciated!
