Hello, I’m relatively new to the land rover owners club and have bought a 2001 td4 Freelander, touch wood haven’t had any major issues apart from one. I was on the way back from Edinburgh when bang clatter and the front propshaft fell completely off, speaking to the lad at the place I bought my new propshaft from he said it was a bearing failure. So I’ve bought a brand new front propshaft but don’t know what to do I:e I can fit it but I thought they have to be balanced and such. Advice or direction please..

Hi and welcome, The best thing to do is remove all the remaining prop and VCU from the car if it hasten been already as trying to fit just half a prop is near impossible and it would be quicker to do it on the ground not 2 foot in the air. Once down have a look at the video below. You will need some female torques sockets (I think they are called that) and extension bars, because the prop is attached with those sort of bolts. Do a search on the forum or look in either the Haynes manual or the Rave disk (Again search forum) for the sizes and torque wrench settings. Good luck

Propshafts don't just fall off. They're designed not to fall off, even if a bearing was to fail. So presumably it wasn't bolted on correctly, or the engine lower tie bar is so loose, it's caused the front CV joint to come apart.

The replacement doesn't need to be balanced, as it was balanced when it was made.

I think there's more to this, as propshafts don't just fall off.

Welcome to the forum Ajwila and welcome too to the Freelander mad house :D

I totally agree with Nodge above: unless there has been some kind of spectacular mechanical failure, I just can't see how the prop can "fall off"??? It needs investigating to work out what on earth has happened...
